Protease activity in human urine erythropoietin preparations.
The presence of protease activity in 22 of 23 crude urine erythropoietin (Ep) preparations was identified by two different protease assays. Protease activity was enhanced at pH 4.5. Seven known protease inhibitors, two chelating agents, a sulfhydryl reagent and a chaotrophic agent failed to inhibit the protease activity of these Ep preparations. However, heating at 80 degrees C for 5 min uniformly eliminated protease activity without affecting Ep activity. In view of the sensitivity of cell surface proteins to proteolytic attack, the presence of protease activity in crude preparations of Ep should be considered when such preparations are employed in cell culture experiments.

Preoperative embolization of meningiomas.
Embolization of very vascular meningiomas prior to operation will reduce the loss of blood during operation. The technique of preoperative embolization is discussed, and 11 cases are presented.

Branch migration and the international dispersal of families.
This paper discusses the dispersal of facilities where family members migrate to different destination countries. Terminology for internationally dispersed families is proposed, and the term branch migration is suggested for the migration of related people from the same source country to different destination countries. Data from two 1993 surveys of senior secondary students show that 22% of Sydney students and 20% of Hong Kong students have relatives in two or more other countries. The data suggest that many Asian migrant families have branched between the US, Canada, Australia and other migrant-receiving nations. The causes and implications of the international dispersal of families are discussed.
