We report a patient with synchronous triple cancers arising in the digestive tract. It was a combination of esophageal, gastric and colonic cancers; total excision was performed in one operation. Histological study confirmed that each cancer had developed independently. The esophageal cancer was of ulcerated type; histologically it was poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The gastric and colonic cancers were both of Borrmann II type and well differentiated adenocarcinoma.

We examined whether antitumor immunity could be generated by the inoculation of cytokine-producing murine neuroblastoma cells (C1300), and whether the immunity might be effective for the established tumors of wild-type (wt) cells. For that purpose, we transduced low immunogenic C1300 cells with interleukin-2 (IL-2), GM-CSF, or IL-4 genes. A loss of tumorigenicity in syngeneic mice was observed using IL-2- and GM-CSF- but not IL-4-producing C1300 cells, although their in vitro growth rates were not affected by the transduction. The syngeneic mice that had rejected IL-2 or GM-CSF producers did not develop tumors of wt cells inoculated subsequently, but formed tumors of irrelevant syngeneic mammary tumor cells. Accordingly, the inoculation of IL-2 or GM-CSF producers into immunocompetent mice generated tumor-specific acquired immunity. The induced immunity using IL-2 or GM-CSF producers was also effective in eradicating established subcutaneous tumors of wt cells and in reducing the number of preexisting metastatic foci in the liver. These data suggest a potential application of IL-2- or GM-CSF-producing syngeneic tumor cells for the treatment of low immunogenic neuroblastomas.
The mechanism of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (CDDP) resistance was examined by using a CDDP-resistant (KFr) cell line established by continuous exposure of KF cells (derived from serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary) to escalating doses of CDDP. When KFr cells were incubated with 66.7 microM CDDP, the uptake of CDDP was significantly inhibited and the cellular content in the KFr cells was about a half of that in KF cells after incubation for 4 h. When the KF or KFr cells were incubated for 4 h with 100 microM CDDP, the release pattern of CDDP from KFr cells was similar to that from KF cells. In addition, the DNA histogram of both KF and KFr cells revealed that KF cells seemed to contain two clones of cell population and the KFr cells may have been selected by exposure to CDDP. At 3 h after intraperitoneal administration of 0.5 mg of CDDP per mouse to nude mice with KF or KFr tumor, the CDDP content in the KFr tumor was significantly lower than that in the KF tumor. In contrast, at 6 or 9 h after CDDP administration the CDDP content in the KFr tumor was significantly higher than that in the KF tumor. Furthermore, the KFr cells had cross-resistance to various CDDP analogues including carboplatin. It was shown that cellular uptakes of two CDDP analogues into KFr cells were significantly lower than those into KF cells.
HTLV-I seroprevalences of 3.63% (02/55), 12.19% (10/82) and 13.88% (10/72) were demonstrated among Tiryio, Mekranoiti and Xicrin Amazonian Indians, respectively, by the Western blotting enzyme assay (WBEI). By indirect immunoelectron microscopy (IIEM), 2 Tiriyo, 9 Mekranoiti and 6 Xicrin Amerindians were reactive. Of 44 serum samples from Japanese immigrants, none reacted by any of the techniques before mentioned. One, 8 and 6 serum samples from Tiryio, Mekranoiti and Xicrin Indians, respectively, were both WBEI and IIEM positive. Our results strongly suggest that HTLV-I and/or an HTLV-I antigenic variant circulate (s) among populations living in the Amazon region of Brazil.
The chemopreventive effects of protocatechuic acid (PCA) were investigated during the post-initiation stage of the N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP)-initiated hamster pancreatic tumorigenesis model. Female 5-week-old hamsters were divided into 6 groups. Animals in groups 1-3, each consisting of 30 hamsters, were given two s.c. injections of 20 mg/kg body weight of BOP with a one week interval as an initiation treatment. After the BOP injection, hamsters in groups 1 and 2 were respectively fed diet supplemented with 1000 or 500 ppm of PCA for 49 weeks. The animals in group 3 were treated with BOP alone. The animals in groups 4-6, each consisting of 10 hamsters, were given 1000 or 500 ppm PCA, or basal diet alone without prior BOP injection. At the termination of experimental week 52, the incidences and multiplicities of neoplastic lesions in the pancreas were comparable among the BOP-treated groups. However, the incidence of pancreatic tumors larger than 3 cm was significantly lower in the PCA-treated high dose groups than in the control group (p < 0.05). Moreover the incidence of advanced pancreatic cancers which had directly invaded adjacent tissues such as the diaphragm, spleen and stomach was reduced by the PCA treatments, being significantly (p < 0.01) lower in group 2 than in group 3. Our results thus indicated that PCA can inhibit the late post-initiation or progression phase of BOP-induced pancreatic carcinogenesis in hamsters.
