Effect of human saliva on the phagocytotic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes.

Saliva of healthy subjects was found to enhance phagocytosis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes in vitro. Autologous and homologous polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes, separated from heparinized venous blood samples and treated with two concentrations of saliva, demonstrated increased phagocytotic activity for latex particles. The phagocytotic pattern was similar for the two types of cells, and for the two concentrations of saliva used. There was no significant difference between phagocytosis by cells treated by homologous and autologous saliva.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy findings in 37 patients with monocytic leukemia.

The ultrastructural features of the monocytic blast cells of 37 patients with M4 and M5 types of leukemia were examined with transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopes. The cells showed a large variety in nuclear size and shape, dependent on the stage of cell differentiation. Nuclear pockets, appendices and bridges were observed. The cytoplasm contained perinuclearly located fibrils, occasionally elongated mitochondria and Auer bodies. The surface ultrastructure of the cells was similar to that of healthy monocytes, but often numerous blebs were observed.

A novel micromethod for the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay for endotoxin, based on hydrostatic pressure.

A micromethod for performing the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay for the presence of endotoxin is described which requires only about five percent of the standard amount of LAL reagent. The method is based upon measuring an increased amount of hydrostatic pressure required to cause a gelled LAL sample to flow from a capillary tube. The method is simple, rapid and correlates well with the results of the standard LAL assay procedure.

Osteomyelitis of both clavicles as a complication of subclavian venipuncture.

Complications of subclavian vein catheterization are common and include pneumothorax, hemothorax, and sepsis. Osteomyelitis is a rare complication. The present report describes a patient with osteomyelitis of both clavicles due to subclavian vein venipuncture, in whom fever and chills were absent and the sole clinical finding was local pain and tenderness in the involved area.

Dipyridamole-induced epistaxis.

The case history of a patient treated with dipyridamole who developed severe epistaxis, accompanied by alteration of the platelet aggregation tests, is presented. The bleeding did not respond to local therapy and stopped only after discontinuation of the drug and normalization of the platelet aggregation. Hemorrhage, especially in elderly patients, should be considered as a possible complication of dipyridamole administration.
