[HL-A and ankylosing spondylarthritis].

With the investigation of HL A phenotypes of 133 patients with an akylozing spondylarthritis, 110 males and 23 females, confirmed incidence of antigen B 27 was established in 87.96 per cent versus 10.78 per cent of 1085 control healthy subjects. The families of 24 patients were also examined with a total of 27 subjects HLA-B27 positive relations, among them 11 cases of SA with a latent course so far. The results from those exminations reveal that HLA-B27 antigen investigations could aid making the diagnosis in cases, suspected of SA, together with the other diagnostic methods.

HLA system and Balkan endemic nephropathy (a collective study with the collaboration of all participants in the HLA workshop--Sofia 1976).

Balkan endemic nephropathy, a fatal family disease with unknown aetiology and pathogenesis is typical for three neighbouring regions in Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Rumania. HLA typing of 180 patients from the endemic area in Bulgaria was done and the antigen frequencies were compared with 1264 healthy controls. An increased frequency (P less than 0.001) of the antigen HLA-B18 in the patients was demonstrated.

[HL-A antigens and diabetes mellitus].

Association of juvenile diabetes with antigen B8 and B15 was established with the comparison of the phenotype incidence of 28 HLA antigens from locus A and B among 1085 healthy control subjects and 200 patients with diabetes mellitus (74 with juvenile insulin-dependent type and 126 with insulin-independent diabetes in adults). Only the incidence of antigens B15 and Bw 21 was established to be increased in the cases of insulin-dependent type of diabetes in adults. That raises a new interest in the further study of the problem.

[Clinical importance of the immunoserological data on the bone allotransplantation (author's transl)].

The clinical and immunoserological data in 66 bone grafted patients are analysed. The importance of the immunological histocompatibility in bone allotransplantation is discussed in a short introduction. The method of transplantation is given and the clinical material is analysed in 3 tables. It is clear from the discussion, that in 6 out 66 patients there are data for an isoimmunization in result of the transplantation. Cytotoxins in the patients' sera are demonstrated after transplantation of frozen grafts. No HL-A antibodies are demonstrated following transplantation of bone grafts, treated after the method of Maatz and Bauermeister. The humoral antibodies are of a greater importance in transplantation of larger bone grafts, as well as of bone-joints complexes. It is acceptable that the immune conflict is of importance as regards to the pathological resorption of the graft. Often, the histocompatibility is a basical reason for the suppuration and sequestration of the graft. The antigenicity of the graft possesses an inductive action concerning the new bone formation. The importance of the osteogenic possibility of the bone-bed-recipient is underlined. It is desirable for a modern tissue bank to be able to offer bone grafts with determined specificity concerning ABO, Rhesus-D and HL-A systems. This will be a new perspective in the bone allotransplantation.

Differences in the immunogenicity of the HL-A antigens.

Comparing the expected and observed HL-A antibody forming in condition of fetomaternal immunization in 184 pregnant women, some differences in the immunogenic strength of HL-A antigens were investigated. The HL-A antigens were graded in three groups in accordance with their coefficient of immunogenicity as follows: in first group, with a coefficient more than 50 are HL-A2, HL-A7, HL-A5, W22, HL-A13, W27 and W10; in second group, with a coefficient from 25 to 50 are HL-A1, W24, HL-A11, W5, W14 and HL-A12; and in the third group, with a coefficient less than 25 are HL-A3, W25 and HL-A8. The data about the other HL-A antigens are not significant.

[Study of Salmonella cultures. IV. Immunogenicity of Salmonella resistant to antibiotics].

Three avirulent and 5 slightly virulent for birds mutants of Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella braenderup, resistant to streptomycin (S), chlorteracyclin (CT), and chloramphenicol (Ch) were used in the production of live vaccines. The latter were tested for immunogenicity on albino mice and birds. On the eighth and 15th day following vaccination the protein fractions in the blood serum of the birds were followed up through electrophoresis on agar gel, while the agglutinin titer was determined by means of test tube agglutination. The experimental results were mathematically processed with the use of statistical methods. All slightly virulent and resistant to antibiotics mutants showed strong immunogenic properties and gave protection (preventing death) to 76.2-81.82 per cent of the mice. Of the avirulent mutants one showed moderate virulence giving protection to 71.43 per cent of the animals. Tested on 110-day-old chickens the avirulent mutants gave protection to 80 per cent of them. The average titers of the blood serum antibodies of birds vaccinated with immunogenic mutants, and the average percent values of the gamma-globulin fractions were higher on the eighth than on the 15th day. The protein fractions showed changes in the albumin and the gamma-globulin. The rate of correlation between these indices, as shown by the coefficient of correlation, is high (rxy = - 0.843). In this case the negative value of rxy in the equation points to the negative link between the characters.

On the association of the HLA system with epilepsy in children.

HLA typing was done in 51 unrelated children with epilepsy of unknown origin. The frequency of the antigens of the loci A, B, C, and DR were compared with control groups as follows: (1,085 for the loci A and B, and 200 for C and DR). Statistically significant increased frequency of HLA-DR5 (X2 = 13.08, p less than 0.001) in the patients was demonstrated. Association between HLA-DR5 with different type of seizures was not found in this study.
