[Treatment of urinary infections with ticarcillin and clavulanic acid (Clavucar) by the intramuscular route].

20 patients suffering from hospital-acquired UTI received intramuscularly ticarcillin 1 g and clavulanic acid 200 mg for 8 days. At the end of antimicrobial therapy 84.2% of the pts presented sterile urine. After 2 weeks 68.4% of the pts continued to have sterile urine. No significant side effects were registered. The results demonstrate that the association of ticarcillin with clavulanic acid can be considered a useful option in hospital acquired UTI.

Diffuse lymphoid tissue associated with the human bulbourethral gland. An immunohistologic characterization.

This study investigates the presence and distribution of immunocompetent cells in bulbourethral glands obtained from four multiorgan transplant donors. Monoclonal antibodies reacting with B (Leu 12+) and T (Leu 4+) cells, suppressor-cytotoxic cells (Leu 2+), helper-inducer (Leu 3a+) and natural killer (Leu7+) phenotypes, monocyte-macrophages, (LeuM3+), and cells expressing interleukin-2 receptor and HLA-DR antigen were tested in all specimens using an indirect immunoperoxidase staining procedure. T lymphocytes were estimated to represent 10% of the mucosal cell population. Almost all intraepithelial lymphocytes were suppressor-cytotoxic (CD8+) cells. The results demonstrate the presence of a defined distribution of immunocompetent cells in these sex accessory glands. Their role in combatting infections or other chronic genitourinary diseases is still undefined.

Determination of cymiazole residues in honey by liquid chromatography.

A liquid chromatographic method is described for the determination of cymiazole residues in honey. This acaricide is determined on a reversed-phase (C18) column, with a CH3CN-0.001N HCl-NaCl mixture (950 mL + 50 mL + 0.3 g/L) as the mobile phase, and UV detection at 265 nm. Cymiazole is extracted with n-hexane from aqueous alkalinized (pH 9) honey solutions. No further cleanup of the honey extract was required before chromatographic analysis. Recoveries on control samples fortified with 0.01, 0.10, and 1.00 ppm cymiazole ranged from 92 to 102%. The limit of determination was 0.01 ppm.

Calcified retroperitoneal fibroma.

A case of 31-year-old male with a retroperitoneal tumor is described. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a left para-aortic calcific mass, adjacent to the left lobe of the liver and to the upper pole of the left kidney. A CT-scan of the abdomen showed the mass to originate from the left adrenal gland. At operation, a large, retroperitoneal mass, adherent to the left kidney and the spleen, but not infiltrating, was excised. Histologically the tumor was diagnosed as a calcified osteo-producing fibroma. Benign retroperitoneal tumors represent about 25% of all retroperitoneal neoplasm. This reported case represents a retroperitoneal tumor of slow growth and benign clinical course whose characteristic consists of the heavy calcifications which are normally absent in a fibroma type mass.
