Non-occlusive infarction of the intestine without any associated medical disorder responsible for prolonged hypotension, is a rare clinical entity. A retrospective analysis of 46 cases revealed that the disease occurred predominantly in young, healthy, male patients. The classical presentation was of abdominal pain and persistent tachycardia out of proportion to the abdominal signs of distension, mild tenderness and reduced bowel sounds. The presenting features were of peritonitis due to perforation (63%) and intestinal obstruction (37%). A preoperative diagnosis was suspected only in six cases. Operative findings revealed that the bowel was infarcted without involvement of the mesenteric vessels, which were pulsatile up to the bowel wall. The characteristic findings of the disease, which mainly affected the jejunum (69.6%), were: (i) infarcted area of the bowel surrounded by skip lesions of purple, constriction bands; (ii) multiple small perforations in a paper-thin bowel: or (iii) a long linear perforation. Histologically, ischaemic changes were found to affect the mucosa and submucosa beyond the macroscopic limits. Mortality was high (19.6%).
We present a patient with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria with diffuse hepatic central vein thrombosis who presented with encephalopathy and recovered from the hepatic manifestations with antihepatic coma measures alone.
Dried alcoholic extract of fresh Lantana camara leaves (LE), on oral administration to albino rats of both sexes, induced photodermatitis during exposure to clear sunlight for 1 hr. Its severity was related to the dose of LE and was maximal in rats exposed to sunlight from 4 to 14 hr after feeding LE and gradually declined over 40 hr. Wavelengths of light about 540 to 570 mu only were effective. In control study, the alcoholic extract of edible spinach leaves was only 1/3 in potency and its effect lasted for less than 20 hr. LE did not raise serum bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT or cause liver injury as assessed by light microscopy. However, like CCL4 but unlike spinach extract, LE impaired excretion of BSP by liver, proportionate to the dose and also maximal at 5.5 hr declining thereafter over 40 hr.

The effect of enhanced cell replication induced by partial hepatectomy (PH) in aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis has been studied in rats of the inbred As2 strain. Animals were given 0.25 mg/kg body weight of AFB1 as a single intraperitoneal dose 24 h after PH. Non-hepatectomized animals given the same dose of AFB1 served as controls. Neoplastic nodules and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were detected respectively in 100% and 90% of hepatectomized animals sacrificed between 55 and 65 weeks after AFB1 administration. None of the ten non-hepatectomized rats sacrificed at this time interval showed HCC or neoplastic nodules. On histochemical staining the tumour population was found to be heterogeneous. Thus PH resulted in enhancement of AFB1-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in rats of the AS2 strain.
A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum presenting with unusual features of fever and leucocytosis is reported. This is the youngest patient reported in the literature who had this tumour in the mediastinum.
During a period of six months from September, 1985 to March, 1986, there were twenty seven cases of pyogenic meningitis due to Neisseria meningitidis Group A. Maximum number of cases could be diagnosed by antigen detection by latex agglutination test. The organism was sensitive to all commonly used antibiotics. The patients affected were mostly young adults. The mortality rate was eleven per cent.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare tumor. The role of CT Scan, morphological details and the electron microscopic findings have been highlighted in the diagnosis of the lesion. The present patient, in which the tumor had recurred following surgical excision, was treated successfully with a combination of radiation, further surgery, and maintenance chemotherapy. We also feel that such a planned multidisciplinary approach is justified as the initial treatment for all advanced lesions in view of high recurrence rates reported following use of radiotherapy or surgery alone.
Tritiated thymidine labeling index (LI) was determined in 25 unselected children with cytochemically proved ALL, at various stages of the disease. All the cases were treated by a uniform therapeutic protocol. Pretreatment LI determined in 15 cases showed an inverse correlation with the duration of first complete remission. LI was also studied during remission in 23 patients. Six out of these 23 patients relapsed within subsequent 90 days, while the rest continued to be in remission. Mean LI of the nonerythroid cells in later group of patients was found to be significantly higher than that of the patients who relapsed.
Malnourished and well-fed neonatal Holtzman rats 10 days of age were exposed to 3 doses of aflatoxin B1 [(AFB1) CAS: 1162-65-8] at intervals of 96 hours to study the combined effect of malnutrition and cell replication in AFB1-induced hepato-carcinogenesis. The neonatal model made use of the fact that cell replication persists in the liver for 3 weeks of postnatal life. Malnutrition during suckling was induced by adopting the techniques of Widdowson and McCance of increasing the litter size to 16. Following AFB1 administration, the malnourished animals were rehabilitated on a high-protein pellet diet given ad libitum. Preneoplastic lesions and neoplastic nodules were identified in the livers of the 2 groups. Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) was detected in the sera by immunoprecipitation. The preneoplastic lesions appeared earlier, and their progression was faster in the malnourished group as compared to the well-fed animals. By 65 weeks following AFB1 exposure, 6 of 17 (35%) animals from the malnourished group showed neoplastic nodules, whereas no such nodules were observed in the animals from the well-fed group. Neoplastic nodules showed a variable pattern of enzyme activities. Under the electron microscope the changes were again more marked in the animals of the malnourished group as compared to those of the well-fed group. In the former group serum AFP was detected as early as 46 weeks, and by 55-65 weeks almost 50% of the animals from the same group showed positivity for serum AFP. None of the animals from the well-fed group showed any positivity for serum AFP throughout the study. This study thus indicates that preneoplastic lesions-neoplastic nodules are enhanced when cell replication and malnutrition coexist during AFB1-induced hepatocarcinogenesis.
