[The incidence of Hymenolepis nana infestation in Dolj County].

The present paper reports on the incidence of the Hymenolepis nana cestode in the Dolj County, in 45,725 cases, in the polyclinic and hospital, between 1985 and 1987, with several variation, on age-groups and as a function of sex. Our remarks, made during this period and on the whole group of the subjects investigated in the polyclinic and hospital show the low incidence, of 2.34% of Hymenolepis nana, versus 97.16%, a value found for the following parasites investigated: Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba coli, Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura. Mention should be made that this incidence has been increasing since 1985, when it recorded 28.21%. In 1986 this value reached 36.63%, and in 1987 it remained almost the same, 35.25%. Analysis of the seasonal evolution of hymenolepiasis shows a maximum during autumn and a minimum during winter in the polyclinic, and also during spring in the hospital. Increase or diminution of the incidence of this parasitosis, irrespective of season, is a function of the age group and of the children's sex: the male sex was is prevalent in the hospital and the female sex in the polyclinic (in 1987). The greater incidence of Hymenolepis nana in the adult requires the investigation of his immunity state.

Immunological investigations in inbred mice chronically infected with cytopathogenic agents isolated from human cases of Balkan endemic nephropathy.

An experimental chronic infection was induced in inbred A2G and CBA mice by repeated administration of four cytopathogenic agents isolated from human cases of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). The slight humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to the BEN agents recorded in A2G mice were associated with autoimmunity and hypersensitivity phenomena. In contrast, the normal, intense immune response observed in CBA mice was not accompanied by any immunopathological changes. In both mouse lines the chronic infection with human BEN agents led to a secondary immune deficiency against sheep red blood cells or tuberculin.

The management of the difficult peripherally inserted central venous catheter line removal.

Difficulty with removing peripherally inserted central catheters is being encountered with increasing frequency. The most common cause of this phenomenon is venous spasm. Although gentle traction may overcome mild spasm, aggressive pulling is contraindicated. Methods and maneuvers to alleviate spasm are discussed, the simplest of which is to attempt catheter removal again after a short (20 to 30 minutes) or intermediate (12 to 24 hours) length of time, at which time spasm may have spontaneously abated.

Antitumor effects of erucylphosphocholine on brain tumor cells in vitro and in vivo.

The antineoplastic activity of erucylphosphocholine (ErPC) on C6 rat glioma cells and the human glioblastoma cell lines A172 and T98G was studied in vitro. ErPC exerted concentration- and time-dependent cytostatic and cytotoxic actions. The effects of ErPC on C6 cells were stronger than hexadecylphosphocholine and similar to 1-O-octadecyl-2-O-methyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine. The human cell lines were more sensitive to ErPC (LC50 = 36 microM and 29 microM) than C6 cells (LC50 = 70 microM) (48 hours, WST-1-test). Morphological characteristics of apoptotic cell death were observed. Rats bearing intracerebral and subcutaneous gliomas were treated with intravenous ErPC for 30 days to determine the antitumor effects of ErPC in vivo. ErPC accumulation in subcutaneous tumors was higher than in brain tissue. Peripheral tumors revealed a better response than CNS-tumors. There was a strong negative relationship between the concentration of ErPC and the weight of peripheral tumors. ErPC is considered to be promising for chemotherapy of malignant brain tumors.
