500 infertile patients (250 with and 250 without left side varicocele) and 33 fertile men were evaluated as far as seminal parameters and the hormonal status were concerned. Sperm motility was constantly lower in infertile patients also when infertile group was compared to fertile one with the same sperm density. Serum testosterone levels were lower in infertile groups when compared to fertile men, and this confirms the existence of an androgenic deficit as a common finding in infertility associated or not to varicocele. FSH and LH increased (p less than 0.001) when sperm density dropped to less than 5 X 10(6) spermatozoa/ml. A negative correlation was found between both gonadotropins and sperm count (p less than 0.001), also after exclusion of azoo- and oligozoospermic (less than 5 X 10(6) spermatozoa/ml) patients (p less than 0.01). Gonadotropins were moreover tightly correlated between each other (p less than 0.001). Our data suggest that both gonadotropins are tightly tuned with sperm output and thus with the spermatogenic potential.
We tested the usefulness of the National Health Service Databases for investigating the incidence of lymphoid malignancies in an Italian community. We analyzed hospital discharge data, drug prescription, pathologic records and death certificates to identify the new cases of Hodgkin's disease, non Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and acute and chronic lymphocytic leukemia diagnosed in the municipal population of Reggio Emilia, northern Italy, 1991 through 1996. The completeness of Hospital discharge data was very high, and several incident cases could be identified only through this source. Completeness of the pathologic registry was satisfactory for Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and this source independently yielded a few incident cases of lymphoid neoplasms. Analysis of death certificates and drug prescriptions appears to be of limited value in the epidemiology of lymphoproliferative diseases.

The paper presents a selected review of the epidemiological analyses performed in recent years (1984-1988) in the Institute of Malattie Infettive, Profilassi e Polizia Veterinaria of the University of Bologna on animal parasitoses, with special reference to the evaluation of some risk factors of bovine, swine and canine helminthoses, and to the validity of the coprological test for some parasites of the red fox.
In an open, controlled study we treated 55 patients suffering of psoriatic arthritis (PsA), 29 patients suffering of Bechterew's disease (MB) and 16 patients with Reiter's syndrome with Salazopyrin at a daily dosage of 2000 mg. We monitored the following criteria of activity: duration of morning stiffness, joint index, global well being scored by the patient and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. All these criteria improved during the treatment; there was a profound improvement in the RS group, whereas the MB group showed only a slight improvement; the PsA group ended between this two extremes. The effect of the drug appeared between week 5 and 15 of treatment. 21% of all patients had to discontinue the treatment because of severe side effects; this figure correlates with the percentages given in the literature. Most of these side effects appeared from week 3 to week 7 of treatment; after week 15 none of the patients had to discontinue the medication of because of severe side effects.
