A method for measuring regional myocardial blood flow with a polarographic hydrogen-clearance technique, and its experimental application in dogs, are described. Under pentobarbitone anaesthesia, flow to the superficial (3 mm) and deep (8 mm) layers of the left ventricle was not significantly different. Neither hypocapnia (PaCO2 = 24 mm Hg) nor halothane significantly altered differential distribution of blood flow to the superficial and deep layers of the myocardium. Hypocapnia was followed by a fall in myocardial blood flow (MBF) associated with increased myocardial vascular resistance (MVR). Administration of halothane 0.5 per cent at normal levels of PaCO2 led to a fall in MBF of approximately 20 per cent with no significant changes in MVR.
In any case of intra-abdominal trauma or hemorrhage a preoperative IVP is essential to determine the renal status. Preoperative catheter occlusion of the renal artery in these vascular tumors may be attempted to decrease blood loss. Stigmas of tuberous sclerosis should be sought in patients with vascular renal tumors, especially if they are bilateral. Conservation of renal tissue in tuberous sclerotic patients harboring renal angiomyolipomas is important.
The variation in current and accelerating voltage across an X-ray tube, that occurs over the mains voltage waveform cycle, produces changes in photon flux and spectrum shape. A knowledge of these changes is required to provide an understanding of the parameters affecting X-ray output. Variation in the photon flux will cause distortion of a measured 'mean' spectrum if the dead time of the spectrometry system employed varies over the waveform cycle. A system has been developed that enables the spectrometer to be synchronized to the mains voltage cycle so that variations in photon flux and the instantaneous spectra at selected parts of this cycle can be measured. The variation in photon flux is dependent upon the type of power supplies (both high and low tension). the tube current and the degree of filtration employed. Examples are given of the ripple of photon output due to the voltage and current ripple for a nominally constant potential generator and a half-wave rectified type. The way in which they interact to produce the measured variation is shown.

Technical possibilities for the histochemical demonstration of some biogenous amines with the scanning electron-microscope and X-ray microanalysis were shown by using argentaffine and chromaffine reactions. Objects were adrenals of adult minipigs. Beside morphologic studies the amounts of silver or chromium can be determined semiquantitatively by the intensity of the specific X-radiate from "sum up-analysis" out of punctual areas. Furthermore the high amine concentrations in the adrenal medulla permit the performance of "line-analysis" and of "element-distribution-pictures" for silver or chromium. At the points chosen for analysis the concentration of epinephrine + norepinephrine is six times as high in the adrenal medulla as in the cortex; for norepinephrine alone it is only three times higher. Line-analysis shows that the concentration of katecholamines in the cortex is very low in the periphery and high near the medulla. The chromaffine reaction for serotonin leads to a distinct chromium peak in the medulla with a distribution quotient of 4.6 : 1 versus the cortex showing that there must be remarkable amounts of serotonin in the adrenal medulla, inspite of the fact that serotonin cannot by synthetized there from its natural precursor.
Treatment of 52 cases with Arwin is reported. Convincing success was achieved in disorders of peripheral arterial blood flow in stage III (pain at rest), in which more than 80% of the patients treated became free from pain. In stage IV the success rate is barely 50%. A combination of thrombolysis with streptokinase and Arwin instead of heparin proved valuable as a primary approach in poor outflow conditions. In 4 out of 5 successful second lyses after reobliteration the vascular system remained patent under Arwin.

The intravenous application of 60 mg streptozotocin/kg body weight to a Hanford miniature pig 8 days after a first dose of 30 mg/kg led to a diabetes with loss of insulin response to glucose, hyperglycaemia, glucosuria and a considerable increase of triglycerides and cholesterol. The application of 40 mg streptozotocin/kg to a second pig had no effect.
A three-stage approach to carcinoma of the bladder consists of preliminary urinary diversion, radiation therapy, and simple total cystectomy. We have used this method for more than ten years. The survival rates are the same as generally published, and the morbidity and mortality contrast favorably with other reports. To date no patient has died within two months of completion of the course of therapy.
The relative merits of tungsten and molybdenum targets for mammography have been the subject of much discussion. Therefore the spectra and outputs (at constant potential) from molybdenum and tungsten targets, interchangeable in the same tube, have been measured with a Ge(Li) detector and ion chamber respectively. All conditions apart from the target material were unaltered. The spectra have been corrected for the distortions produced by the detector. The effects of filtration on spectra and exposure rates have been calculated and are in agreement with measured values. The spectra and outputs from molybdenum and tungsten targets filtered by aluminium and molybdenum have been investigated and the results are discussed with reference to mammography and the radiography of specimens.
The drinking patterns and the attempt to institute prohibition during 1969-71 on Namoluk Atoll, in the Eastern Caroline Islands, are described. The question of prohibition became a symbol of an intergenerational struggle for political power, which was eventually won by the younger antiprohibitionists.
