The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of state of training and gender on ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) at the lactate threshold (LT), and to determine whether RPE during moderate to heavy sub-maximal exercise is more closely associated with LT or %VO2max. RPE at the LT (RPELT) and at various percentages of VO2max were compared in 10 male and 10 female trained distance runners, and 10 male and 10 female untrained subjects, 18 to 35 yr of age. Mean (+/- SD) VO2max [ml X kg FFW-1 (fat-free weight) X min-1] of the trained men and women (72.3 +/- 1.4 and 73.1 +/- 1.6) was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for the untrained men and women (60.2 +/- 1.4 and 53.2 +/- 1.8), confirming their higher cardiorespiratory capacity. Similarly, the mean LTs (%VO2max) of the trained men and women (79.2 +/- 1.7% and 73.3 +/- 1.8%) were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for the untrained men and women (66.5 +/- 3.3% and 58.9 +/- 3.3%), and mean values for the men were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for the women. The means for RPELT for the four groups, 13.6 +/- 2.1, 13.5 +/- 1.6, 13.5 +/- 1.5, and 12.9 +/- 1.3, respectively, were not significantly different (P greater than 0.05), even though the ratings were given at markedly different levels of VE, VO2 (1 X min-1), heart rate, and %VO2max.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Centchroman [dl-3,4-trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-phenyl-4-[p-(beta-pyrrolidinoethoxy)phenyl] - 7-methoxychroman hydrochloride], an antifertility agent under clinical evaluation, has been resolved into its optical enantiomers. The cytosol estrogen receptor binding affinity and estrogenic, antiestrogenic and antiimplantation activities of the two enantiomers have been determined. The enantiomers display a 7-fold difference in receptor affinity, and a corresponding difference in stimulation of the uterine growth and antiimplantation activity was observed in rats.
A single oral administration of centchroman (1.25 mg/kg) to adult female rats within 24 h of mating induced slight acceleration in the rate of transport of embryos through the oviducts. The compound did not seem to produce any deleterious effect on preimplantation embryonic development since well organized and apparently normal embryos were collected from the genital tract up to Day 12 of pregnancy. The recovery rate of embryos from centchroman-treated rats was, however, significantly reduced after Day 4 of pregnancy. There was some stimulation in the rate of cleavage of embryos and morula to blastocyst transformation, but retardation in the shedding of the zona pellucida. The rate of blastocyst formation was not altered when 6-8-cell embryos collected from the oviducts of control rats were transferred to the uteri of control or centchroman-treated females. A delay in zona shedding was observed in the centchroman-treated recipients.

Weekly oral administration of centchroman at 1 and 2.5 mg/kg doses for 3, 6 or 12 months to adult female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) significantly decreased glycogen content and activity of phosphorylase, glucokinase, lactate dehydrogenase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzymes in all the genital tract tissues. In general, the inhibition was dose and time dependent. No effect was, however, observed in the liver and serum.

Serum copper estimations were carried out in 44 cases of acute myocardial infarction, 23 cases of angina and 40 age and sex matched healthy controls. A highly significant degree of rise in serum copper levels was observed in patients with acute myocardial infarction as compared to cases of angina and controls. The levels showed a gradual rise with peak on 7th day followed by a gradual decline returning to normal on 28th day. The pattern was the same both in complicated and uncomplicated cases except that values were still higher on the 28th day in complicated cases of acute myocardial infarction. Mean peak serum copper levels were significantly higher (p less than .001) in complicated cases of acute myocardial infarction as compared to uncomplicated cases. Significant correlation was found between serial serum copper changes and creatinine phosphokinase and lactic dehydrogenase levels. The prognostic and diagnostic significance of serum copper has been discussed.
Treatment of the chronic schizophrenic patient is often complicated by depressive symptoms that can be difficult to detect. Because of the association between depressive symptoms and poor outcome features, the presence of these symptoms has substantial treatment implications. Treatment issues for depressive schizophrenic patients include selecting appropriate drug therapy, overcoming high rates of noncompliance, dealing with self-doubt and social withdrawal, and protecting patients from recurrent depressive symptomatology, suicide, or psychotic relapse. Controlled studies suggest that neuroleptic therapy is the drug treatment of choice; addition of an antidepressant does not appear to enhance therapeutic efficacy and may be associated with increased adverse effects. Successful treatment also requires the use of assertive case management, community support, family support, and careful patient education.

The syntheses of (+/-) 2 alpha,6 beta -diethyl-7 alpha -ethynyl-3 alpha-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-trans- bicyclo[4.3.0]nonan-7 beta-ol (8), (+/-)2 beta,6 beta-diethyl-7 alpha-ethynyl-3 beta-(p-methoxy-phenyl)-trans-bicyclo[4.3.0]nonan-7 beta-ol 12 and (+/-) 2 alpha,6 beta-diethyl-7 alpha-ethynyl-3 beta-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- trans-bicyclo[4.3.0]nonan-7 beta-ol (18) and their derivatives, which are essentially B-seco-steroids having cis-anti-trans, cis-syn-trans and trans-anti-trans geometries have been carried out. A study of their antiimplantation activities (AI) and receptor binding affinities (RBA) show that trans-anti-trans compounds are biologically most potent, followed by the corresponding cis-anti-trans and cis-syn-trans compounds. The most potent compound 18 is active at 1 mg/kg in rats. Introduction of 7 alpha-ethynyl group increases their AI activity; however, no significant effect on their RBA is observed.
A rater-bind, ABA's design study of 21 cases indicates that diazepam significantly improves tardive dyskinesia and that some of the improvement persists for an extended period after diazepam is withdrawn. Since benzodiazepine receptors and sites of action seem to be mainly in the neocortex (especially frontal), limbic cortex, and deep limbs nuclei, and these structures provide most of the input into the nigrostriatopallidal system that probably regulates its role in voluntary movement, it may be suggested that impaired corticolimbic control of basal ganglia may be a factor in the pathogenesis of tardive dyskinesia.
Twenty four hour incubations of the days 5 and 6 pre-implantation and the days 7 and 8 post-implantation rabbit embryos were carried out in the presence of 3H-labelled steroid substrates viz. dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione (Ad) and testosterone (Te). While both the pre- as well as the post-implantation embryos were able to actively metabolize the various neutral steroid substrates into other neutral, mostly 5 alpha-reduced, steroid metabolites, the conversion of DHEA to Ad or that of DHEA, Ad and Te to estrogens was exhibited only by the days 7 and 8 post-implantation embryos. The findings suggest that pre-implantation blastocysts of rabbit lack the potentiality to synthesize steroids and acquire this ability only after implantation.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) developed in 7.42% patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). It was more frequent among patients with anterior myocardial infarction compared to inferior myocardial infarction. On the basis of sequence of events, cases of ventricular fibrillation (VF) were classified in to Primary (P), Secondary (S) and Agonal (A). 57.69% cases had SVF, 30.76% had AVF and only 11.53% cases had PVF. In all cases of PVF, ECG was normal prior to the development of VF and developed abruptly without any warning.
