Malaria affects many millions throughout the world. Though the exact number of cases is unknown, experts agree that the total is enormous and that the disease is an important factor in keeping the Third World poor and deprived. Yet efforts to attack malaria by drugs and mosquito eradication may well be failing. Most efforts to develop a vaccine have been directed at those forms of the malarial parasite that linger in the blood. But the group at New York University led by Dr. Ruth Nussenzweig has been concentrating on parasites in the form called sporozoites, which are found in the salivary glands of infected mosquitoes.
Scabies (mange) is a skin disease of men and animals caused by microscopical acarids. There are mainly three species in Turkey, namely Demodex folliculorum, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, and Pyemones ventricosus. They are easily transmissible from animals to men and from men to animals. These parasites may cause inflammation, thickening, scabrous and severe itching. Serious infectious and parasitic diseases are transmitted from dogs to men. We present a case of Demodectic mange in a dog in Beytepe University Campus.
All kinds of arthropoda can find a suitable environment to grow and spread in this country because of its mild and subtropical climate. Arthropods are harmful to men, animals and plants in many ways. The most important role the arthropods play is in carrying germs and parasites. Cockroaches are widely spread in Turkey, they transmit bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminths mechanically and biologically. Because of their close contact with human beings, these insects encouraged us to make parasitological investigations. In the hindgut of cockroaches we found three nemethod species; Suifunema caudelli, Galebia aegyptiaca, and Hammerschmidtiella diesingi.
