Effect of manganese and copper interaction on behavior and biogenic amines in rats fed a 10% casein diet.

Manganese chloride (1 mg manganese/ml drinking water) and copper sulphate (250 mg copper/kg diet) were administered daily for 30 days to growing rats maintained on a 10% casein diet. Manganese in combination with copper produced impairment in the learning ability and memory of rats in either dietary group, with greater alterations in those receiving a 10% casein diet. Hyperactivation due to the combined effects of the metal ions was identical in both dietary groups. The behavioral aberrations were associated with a marked accumulation of Cu in the brain of rats receiving the 10% casein diet. Combined exposure of Mn and Cu also produced a greater elevation in the levels of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) and a depression of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the brain of animals fed with a 10% casein diet compared to the animals receiving the 21% casein diet. Thus the animals receiving the 10% casein diet appear to be more vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of a combined exposure to manganese and copper. However rats maintained on the 21% casein diet and receiving both manganese and copper showed almost identical changes to those observed after manganese administration alone.

Chandleronema longigutturata (Chandler 1942) gen. et comb. n. (nematoda: acuariidae) from raccoons, Procyon lotor, in Louisiana.

Worms conforming to the description of Synhimantus longigutturata Chandler 1942 were recovered from the stomachs of raccoons, Procyon lotor, in Louisiana. The male is described for the first time. The worm has short, delicate, recurrent and anastomosing cephalic cordons; a long pharynx; and a pair of double, lateral alae, each arising behind a tricuspid cervical papilla. These features differ significantly from those of other species within the genus Synhimantus and, consequently, the worm is transferred to a new genus, Chandleronema.

A hazard of the pollard endotracheal tube.

Two patients are described in whom failure of the Pollard endotracheal tube produced complete respiratory obstruction. Comparisons are made of external diameters, resistance to gas flow and resistance to compression between Pollard tubes and several conventional tubes. It is concluded that the Pollard tube is not satisfactory for microlaryngoscopy.

Changes in CO2 responsiveness and in autoregulation of the cerebral circulation during and after halothane-induced hypotension.

CO2 responsiveness of the cerebral circulation has been measured in baboons before, during, and after halothane-induced hypotension. At a systolic blood pressure (BP) of 60 mmHg, C02 responsiveness was abolished, but was maintained at higher levels of BP. After hypotension, CO2 responsiveness returned to control values. Autoregulation to BP increases induced by intravenous noradrenaline was impaired when cerebral perfusion pressure during the hypotensive period had been below 30-40 mmHg. It is concluded that at levels of halothane-induced hypotension commonly employed clinically, CO2 responsiveness of the cerebral circulation may be absent. The return of CO2 responsiveness in the post-hypotensive phase argues in favour of controlled hyperventilation after neurosurgery which has involved induced hypotension.

Double-blind cross-over trial comparing intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate and placebo in perennial rhinitis.

Twenty-five patients with perennial rhinitis completed a double-blind cross-over trial of intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate 200 mug daily and placebo. Of these patients 19 preferred the active drug and two preferred placebo. There were significant reductions in symptom scores for nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea and in the use of decongestant nasal drops when using the active drug. No changes in morning plasma cortisol levels occurred during the three-week treatment period.
