Effect of chronic cadmium exposure on locomotor behaviour of rats.

Growing male rats were exposed to cadmium (Cd, 100 micrograms/kg, ip) for 51 days and the effect on the different components of locomotor behaviour was assessed on days 38, 46 and 51 of Cd exposure. Significant decrease in distance travelled, stereotypic time and movements, ambulatory time and vertical movements were observed in Cd-exposed rats, whereas the time of rest was increased. The number of entries into the inner as well as the outer squares and the total time spent in the inner squares of the floor area were significantly reduced. Results indicate that Cd exposure results in a general depression in all aspects of motor behaviour leading to decrease in gross locomotor activity. The involvement of an exaggerated emotional reactivity in the behavioural expression of the Cd-treated animals is also emphasized.

Seminoma in pubertal patient with androgen insensitivity syndrome.

The case of a 14-year-old girl with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and metastatic seminoma is reported. She was treated by bilateral adnexectomy, removal of paraaortic lymph nodes, postoperative radiation, and estrogen replacement therapy. She represents the fourth case of gonadal malignancy to be reported in a teenage patient with androgen insensitivity syndrome.

Distribution of haptoglobin phenotypes in oesophageal and gastric cancer.

Haptoglobin (Hp) phenotypes were studied in 72 oesophageal and 104 gastric cancer patients and compared with 100 healthy controls to see if there is any association between oesophageal and gastric cancer and haptoglobin type. There was a significantly increased frequency of Hp 2-1 (59.7%) and Hp 2-2 (91.3%) in oesophageal and gastric cancer patients. Our results suggest that genetic factors play a role in the aetiology and pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tract malignancy.

Unperceived dental needs in a group of Malaysian elderly patients.

The present study analysed the records of 342 elderly subjects aged 55 years and above of different ethnic groups to ascertain the types and level of their unperceived dental needs. The overall percentage of unperceived needs was highest among the Malays (96.1% or 74/77 subjects) and among the men (88.5% or 139/157 subjects). The unperceived need for prosthetic treatment was highest among the Malays and Chinese as well as among women, whereas the unperceived need for treatment for periodontal disease was highest among the Indians. The data for unperceived needs for prosthetic treatment as well as for treatment for caries and periodontal disease were somewhat similar among men. Within each ethnic group, variations among sex in the unperceived needs for the various dental symptoms were also noticeable. Further research is indicated to ascertain the role of traditional and cultural concepts and dogmas in determining the importance attached to the various dental health symptoms within each ethnic group.

Quality control of custom-made compensators.

This paper describes a method for routinely checking the accuracy of individual cerrobend compensators made for use with the Varian Clinicomp-100. The Reduction Ratios (for a given beam energy) are provided for select depth of compensation and field size. It is important to check each compensator before commencing treatment to identify possible operation error and ensure proper filling of the styrofoam with cerrobend. This verification process involves: (1) choosing several points at which the tissue deficit is known; (2) exposing a ready-pack film (Kodak XV-2) in a polystyrene phantom at a suitable depth, both with and without the compensator in place (the dose to which the film is exposed is within the initial linear range of the H and D curve); (3) determining the optical density at the above chosen points; and (4) comparing the O.D. ratios corresponding to the compensated and uncompensated conditions to the Tissue Maximum Ratios (TMRs) for the proper depths at these points. The method of this technique is also incorporated into the quality control check of other compensators, for example, acrylic, brass c-wedges, etc.

Bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy, iridium 192 template, and external beam therapy for localized prostatic carcinoma: complications and results.

Thirty-five patients with prostatic adenocarcinoma were treated by bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and temporary implantation of iridium 192 strands with adjuvant external beam radiotherapy. With the implant the prostate received between 3,200 and 3,500 gray (Gy) followed in two weeks by small-field external beam irradiation for an additional dose of approximately 3,400 Gy. Morbidity included an ileofemoral thrombosis in one patient, and transient radiation proctitis in four patients; one patient required transurethral prostatic resection for obstruction at one year. Local response of the primary tumor was dramatic in every case at three-month follow-up. In 11 of 15 patients (73%), biopsy at one year showed no evidence of disease.

The combined effect of Pb2+ and Mn2+ on monoamine uptake and Na+, K+-ATPase in striatal synaptosomes.

Rat striatal synaptosomes (P2-fraction) were subjected to lipoperoxidation by the addition of 120 microM Fe2+ and 200 microM ascorbic acid. This preparation (pretreated synaptosomes) was used to investigate the interaction of Pb2+ and Mn2+ on the uptake of tritiated catecholamines, Na+, K+-ATPase activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) formation in order to understand the mechanism of enhanced neurotoxicity by concurrent exposure to these metals. The combination of Pb2+ and Mn2+ (25 microM + 100 microM, respectively) produced a significant increase in the uptake of 3H-Dopamine only in the untreated synaptosomes. No significant effect was noted on the uptake of 3H-Norepinephrine in either pretreated or untreated synaptosomes. However, the combination of Pb2+ and Mn2+ produced a pronounced decrease in the activity of Na+, K+-ATPase, but the magnitude of the change was the sum of the individual metal effects. Metal interaction did not produce any significant change in the formation of MDA compared to the control (without addition of metals). These results indicate that Pb2+ and Mn2+ interaction may produce inhibition in the activity of transport ATPase in both the preparation of synaptosomes, with more pronounced effect of synaptosomes subjected to lipoperoxidation and these changes may be responsible for the disruption in the physiology of nerve impulse transmission.

Carcinoma of the female urethra: combined iridium Ir 192 interstitial and external beam radiotherapy.

Three female patients (mean age 55) with carcinoma of the urethra were treated with combined external beam irradiation (4,000 to 5,000 rads) and interstitial irradiation with iridium Ir 192 (2,700 to 3,000 rads) applied with a modified Syed-Neblett template. Two patients are alive with no evidence of disease at 27 and 37 months. One patient died of a second primary tumor at 30 months, without histologic evidence of the original urethral neoplasm. No patient had significant complications of therapy. This treatment regimen is effective for selected women with urethral carcinoma.
