The pulps from 20 traumatized permanent maxillary incisors treated endodontically because progressive hard-tissue formation diminished the pulpal lumen, were studied with light microscopy. The tissue changes were characterized by a varied increase in collagen content. A marked increase in collagen content was associated with a marked decrease in number of cells. Areas of mineralized tissue resembling dystrophic mineralization were present in nine pulps. Osteoidlike tissue with included and lining cells was found adjacent to these mineralized areas in three pulps. In one pulp a moderate infiltration of inflammatory cells was noted, mostly lymphocytes. With the exception of the latter tooth, tissue changes in the pulps in no case warranted endodontic treatment.
Porcine upper small intestine took up radioactive heme in vitro. The binder was localised to the brush borders, was solubilized with Triton X-100 and bound heme with high affinity. The binding was inhibited with non-radioactive heme but not with FeSO4, and control experiments indicated that it was not any of the known heme binders or aggregated heme. The binding factor could also be solubilized from human duodenum.

Quinton-Scribner shunts have been used as a reliable access to the blood-stream in 56 patients treated with intermittent hemodialysis in the years 1965-71. The mean age of 29 men and 27 women was 39 years. Two hundred and thirty-two cannulae showed a mean survival time of 11.2 months for 103 arterial cannulae and 9.0 months for 129 venous cannulae. 700 shunt clotting episodes occurred during 1157 patient months, i.e. 0.6 clotting episode/month. In 350 episodes where saline flushing could not remove the clot, the effect of treatment with streptokinase was considered evident in 79.7%. Shunt cannula infection was a common complication while aseptic cutaneous necrosis and bleeding from the cannulated vessel were seen less frequently. Both severe and less harmful bleeding episodes were seen as a complication of dicumarol therapy. The number of complications to streptokinase treatments was low. The advantages and disadvantages of the Quinton-Scribner shunt for hemodialysis are discussed.
Brescia-Cimino arterio-venous fistulae have been used as blood access for intermittent hemodialysis in 67 patients between 1972-74. The mean age of 32 men and 35 women was 48. Thirty-five patients were dialyzed through an external arterio-venous shunt for as long as 7 years before they received a fistula. Of 92 operations, 63 (68.5%) were successful. Ten patients (14.9%) never received a functioning fistula. The mean function time of 63 fistulae was 8.3 months. Twenty-two functioning fistulae eventually failed. In 11 cases no precipitating factor could be found. In six patients, septicemia coincided with infection at the fistula puncture site. Cardiac decompensation because of augmented venous return to the heart was not observed. Advantages and disadvantages with the Brescia-Cimino fistula are discussed and compared with the Quinton-Scribner shunt.
