In Burkitt's lymphoma, dental structures may provide the route for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in saliva to penetrate the jaws, thereby promoting tumor formation. In children, EBV could enter tooth sockets exposed following deciduous tooth loss and thereby contact jaw marrow lymphocytes stimulating neoplastic transformation. Marrow contact by EBV probably also occurs through carious teeth. Jaw tumors are rare in adults because their jaw marrow is no longer hematopoietic and so lacks the lymphoid substrate for the virus. In adults, jaw marrow lymphocytosis, as accompanies infectious mononucleosis and perhaps malaria, or which could develop around the roots of carious teeth having chronic periapical infection, could provide the substrate for EBV. EBV could then contact the jaw marrow lymphocytes when teeth are extracted and so favor jaw tumor development. Therefore, prevention of dental caries might reduce jaw tumor prevalence in Burkitt's lymphoma except among children ages 6-13 whose jaw marrow would unavoidably become infected by salivary EBV when the latter is present at the time of deciduous tooth loss.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of mandibular osteomyelitis; however, controlled laboratory studies have been limited to the long bones. In this study, osteomyelitis was created in surgically fractured rabbit mandibles by inoculation of Bacteroides melaninogenicus. Two months after inoculation, osteomyelitis was verified by bacterial cultures and inspection of the fracture sites. The animals were then randomly divided into treatment and control groups. The treatment group received HBO (2 atmospheres) for two hours daily for 40 treatment days, whereas the control group was maintained on ambient air. Although HBO therapy did not eliminate the chronic osteomyelitis, it did result in a significant improvement in sinus tract healing, osseous repair, and diminished mobility at the fracture site.

This is the first report of a rectal membrane forming at the site of a low end-to-end rectal anastomosis performed with the EEA circular gun. The diagnosis was made by Gastrografin enema that revealed disparity between the staple line diameter and the bowel lumen. The condition was treated easily by digital breakage of the membrane; there was a complete cure. A brief discussion of the etiology of anastomotic strictures and other gastrointestinal membranes follows.

Ultrastructural observations on the basement membranes of small vessels from hearts of patients with diabetes, myxoedema and neither disease collected post mortem, reveal that the membranes of those with diabetes are nearly three times as thick as those in normal hearts (P less than 0.001), while in patients with myxoedema they are twice normal thickness (P less than 0.001). A significant difference was demonstrated between the thickness of the basement membrane in patients with diabetes and those with myxoedema (P less than 0.001).
