[Pathology of shift work. Study of 4 state-owned factories].

Out of 131 workers whose 2/3 are shifted, 6 have to stop shift-work due to diseases probably bound to the irregular schedule: the frequency of sleeplessness and absenteism was increased, and a loss of weight was noticed. The "psychological" troubles (irritability, tiredness) are more frequent among the shift-workers.

Monitoring of styrene exposure in the polyester industry.

Obtaining reliable results of exposure to styrene in field studies requires an appropriate methodology not only for analytical methods but also for the main strategy of conducting the surveys. This paper briefly describes how and why analytical methods for styrene in air, for its main metabolites in urine (mandelic and phenylglyoxylic acids) and for critical biological function tests were either chosen from the literature or adapted or developed to fit our criteria of convenience and reliability. In a second step of the preparation of field studies, experimental exposures to styrene were carried out on volunteers so that the best indicators of exposure could be determined and data could be obtained on the elimination kinetics of the urinary metabolites and the quantitative relationships between exposure and the urinary concentrations of mandelic and phenylglyoxylic acids. Finally field investigations, including air and biological monitoring, complete industrial hygiene surveys and medical examinations, have been organized and are being carried out in the Swiss polyester industry. Preliminary results concerning biological monitoring are given.

[Clinical study and evolution of various biological parameters (Pb, ALA-D, FEP) in 14 cases after ingestion of lead containing beverages].

Clinical and biological evolution is reported in 14 individuals (adults, teenagers, children) who had ingested lead-containing beverages stored in glazed pottery. There are marked differences between adults and children regarding the half lives of lead in blood. Almost two years after the discovery of the risk, abnormal amounts of Pb, ALA-D and FEP remain in the absence of any other clinical disturbance. The hazard of glazed pottery is reemphasized.

[Risk of chronic carbon monoxide poisoning in automobile garages. Results of a study in the Lausanne region].

Clinical and physiologic data on chronic carbon monoxide poisoning are reviewed and the results of an investigation involving 7 garages in the Lausanne (Switzerland) area are reported. The aim was a practical approach to the relationships between carbon monoxide level in the air, COHb and clinical picture. The study covered working conditions (especially ventilation) but did not take into account of other factors (stresses) which may effect the parameters investigated. CO was measured by continuous recording with an MSA Carbon Monoxide Alarm and the hourly and daily averages were determined. The garage personnel replied to a questionnaire and underwent a brief clinical examination including taking of digital blood samples for measurement of hematocrit and carboxyhemoglobin level by the method of COMMINS and LAWTHER as modified by BUCHWALD. One of the garages did not meet present health requirements. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between carbon monoxide and carboxyhemoglobin. The incidence of complaints was highest in poorly ventilated garages. On the basis of COHb level in the total group of employees, together with data from individual histories, it is possible to evaluate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in a given garage.

[Absence of the vena cava inferior during simultaneous absence of the left kidney in a human fetus].

Atypical pattern of inferior cava (human embryo, sex: male, age: 6 month) is described. The left kidney is absent. The pelvis of the right kidney send two ureters to bladder. Pars hepatica of normal V. cava inferior is missed. Blood transport is formed by a vessel lateral of left suprarenal gland. This vessel is penetrating through pars lumbalis of diaphragm to thorax, goes in analogy to V. hemiazygos later to V. hemiazygos accessoria and flows into the right atrium.
