Detection of major and minor sex pheromone components by the male codling moth Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Electroantennograms (EAGs) recorded from the antennae of male Cydia pomonella L. in response to stimulation with doses of the main sex pheromone component E8,E10-dodecadienol (Codlemone) ranging from 5ng to 500&mgr;g did not differ in their amplitudes from responses obtained to a synthetic 7-component pheromone blend containing the same absolute quantities of Codlemone. Based on differences in spike amplitudes obtained in Single Cell recordings (SCR), Sensilla trichodea on the antenna of males were found to contain at least three receptor neurone types. Two olfactory receptor neurones were tuned to Codlemone, while the third failed to be stimulated by Codlemone or by the minor components of the pheromone blend. As spike activity of the neurones in the S. trichodea stimulated by the 7-component blend did not differ from that of stimulation by Codlemone alone it appears that none of the receptor neurones is sensitive to any of the minor components tested. Scanning-electron-microscopical (SEM) examination of Sensilla auricillica on the antennae of Cydia males revealed two morphologically distinct types: rabbit eared shoehorn and regular shoehorn. SCR from these sensilla showed that only olfactory receptor neurones located in the rabbit-eared shoehorn type were tuned to the minor components. Differences in spike amplitudes (large, intermediate, small) allowed three types of neurones to be distinguished. Only the spike frequency of the intermediate receptor neurone was increased by application of the minor components E8-dodecenol, E9-dodecenol, dodecanol, tetradecanol, hexadecanol and E8,E10-dodecadienal. None were stimulated by Codlemone. These results are discussed in relation to the behavioural role of the minor pheromone components of C. pomonella.

Association of the TNFa2 microsatellite allele with the presence of colorectal cancer.

Independently, our two groups collaborating in this report performed association studies to consider the influence of the TNF region within the human MHC on the presence of colorectal cancer. In the Glasgow Study, 84 colorectal cancer patients were compared with 91 controls at the TNFa microsatellite locus. Analysis of individual alleles by Fisher's exact test revealed a significant overrepresentation of the TNFa2 allele in the colorectal cancer group, after correcting for multiple comparisons. In the Essen Study, 47 colorectal cancer patients were compared with 117 matched controls, and the hypothesis of TNFa2 overrepresentation in colorectal cancer was confirmed. These data provide evidence for the involvement of the TNF locus in the pathogenetic etiology of colorectal cancer.

[Differentiated therapy of proximal femoral fractures].

The operative therapy of 95 proximal femur fractures is reported, which were treated in the Kreiskrankenhaus St. Ingbert/Saar in the time from January 1st 1990 to June 30th 1991. Femoral neck fractures mainly were treated operatively by endoprosthetic replacement with hemiarthroplasty or hip total endoprosthesis. For per- to subtrochanteric femur fractures the use of the dynamic hip screw (DHS) was the treatment of choice, partly with screwing up the trochanter minor, cerclage of the trochanter major and/or with stabilization by bone cement in addition. Despite of a very high average age of the patients and a high rate of mostly severe basic illness for 80% of the fractures a sufficient stability was achieved to allow full weight bearing. 76.8% of the patients could be discharged directly from the surgical treatment. The therapeutic procedure is compared with the recommendations found in the literature. Different conceptions are discussed.

Optical mark reader technology and data base development in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (DACCM) has substantially upgraded its computer resources within the past two years by installing a local area network (LAN) and replacing low-end PC's with PC's utilizing Intel 80286 or 80386 microprocessor technology. Data base development has now become a priority. Data bases are being developed for both clinical and administrative purposes. We are replacing the traditional method of "keypunching" with optical card scanners which results in faster and more accurate data entry directly into the data bases. Previously, such card scanners have been confined to large organizations. We describe a method of data capture and data base development with wide applicability in medicine.

[The effect of various ventilation conditions on evoked potentials of the visual cortex of the cat in distention of the stomach].

In 10 cats anaesthetized using chloralose and with muscular relaxation by gallamine and continuous artificial ventilation in acute experiments photically evoked potentials (PEP) were recorded from the visual area of the cortex under different intragastric pressures and varying tidal volumes. It was the aim of this study to examine whether an exteroceptive stimulus (light flash) in the visual analyzer, which is influenced by an interoceptive stimulation (gastric pressure), may also be modified by different tidal volumes. Times, amplitudes and slope parameters, blood pressure and heart rate of the animals were studied. The PEP of the visual cortex was modified under the influence of the interoceptive stimuli. It could, however, be shown that already hypo- and hyperventilation alone may cause alterations in the latency period of the PEP. They arise in a different manner in individual parts of the measured parameters of the PEP and do not change these values in a typical manner. Additional dilatation of the stomach may suppress the phenomena caused by alterations in the tidal volume. Thus, attention should be paid to both blood gases and acid base balance in animals in studies on viscero-cerebral interrelationships as well as to interactions between different analyses using the method of evoked potentials.

[Effect of interoceptive stimulation of the stomach on photically evoked potentials of the visual cortex with reference to blood pressure and heart rate in the cat].

In ten chloralose narcotized, relaxed and constantly oxygenated cats the stomachs were dilated with two different pressures in acute experiments. Photically evoked potentials (PEP) were derived from the visual cortex of the animals. The aim of the work was to find out in which respect the processing of an exteroreceptive stimulus (light stimulus of only 200 ms) in the visual analyzer can be influenced by an interoceptive stimulation. Besides, it had to be established to which extent the visceral stimulation leads to a change of other vegetative parameters. Qualitative alterations of different PEP-parameters, blood pressure and heart rate of the experimental animals were examined at different stomach pressures. Changes of the positive and negative amplitudes and the time of the negative component of the primary complex of the evoked potential have been observed. Moreover, there could be registered an increase in blood pressure depending on the height of stomach pressure. The heart rate was not influenced. Further studies will have to clarify whether the changes of the PEP are produced by the interoreceptive stimulus or by the changes of blood pressure or respiration.

Complement-mediated phagocytosis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The nature of the opsonic factors in nonimmune human serum for six blood culture isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated by measuring uptake of [3H] adenine-labeled bacteria by human PMNs. Normal human serum, C2- and C4-deficient sera, zymosan-treated serum, and immunoglobulin-deficient sera were used as opsonic sources. Heat inactivation of each of these serum sources markedly reduced its opsonic capacity for all Pseudomonas strains, suggesting that the serum C system was essential for opsonization. Five strains were opsonized in the absence of the classical C pathway; however, kinetic studies revealed that opsonization proceeded at a faster rate when the classical pathway was present. In spite of markedly reduced factor B and C3 levels, zymosan-treated serum retained significant opsonic activity for one of the strains tested. Four strains were poorly opsonized by immunoglobulin-deficient serum, and C activation by these strains appeared to depend upon the presence of antibodies. Two strains, however, were effectively opsonized in a relative absence of antibodies. Thus, in the nonimmune state, phagocytosis of P. aeruginosa is mediated primarily via the C system, and antibodies appear to play a role in the opsonization of some but perhaps not all Pseudomonas strains.
