[Bichat's fat pad: anatomy and imaging].

Topographic anatomy of the different parts of the corpus adiposum buccae is analyzed by coronal, transverse and sagittal sections. These sections are compared with those realized in the same planes by tomodensitometry and magnetic resonance. This comparison allows a better knowledge of the structures shown by imaging in the superficial and deep facial regions.

[The buccal adipose body (Bichat's fat-pad). Morphological study].

Bichat's fat-pad was examined using dissections of newborns and adults, and histological sections of embryos and fetuses. A main part or body with six extensions (masseteric, superficial temporal, deep temporal, pterygomandibular, sphenopalatine and inferior orbital) can be recognized.

C3a(C3adesArg) induces production and release of interleukin 1 by cultured human monocytes.

Purified human C3a(C3adesArg) induced dose-dependent generation of intracellular IL 1 activity and release of IL 1 in cultures of human mononuclear adherent cells in serum-free conditions. Concentrations of C3a(C3adesArg) of 10(-8) M and 6 hr of culture were sufficient to induce production of cell-associated IL 1, as detected in monocyte lysates. Ten- to 100-fold higher concentrations of C3a(C3adesArg) and 24 hr of culture were required for induction of IL 1 release. Release of IL 1 induced by suboptimal amounts of C3a(C3adesArg) was greatly enhanced by the addition of indomethacin to the culture medium. Contamination with C5a of the C3a(C3adesArg) preparation did not account for C3a(C3adesArg)-induced IL 1 production. Induction of IL 1 activity by C3a(C3adesArg) was not due to contaminating LPS, as indicated by the following observations: the amount of contaminating LPS in C3a(C3adesArg) was below that which could induce IL 1 release from human monocytes in serum-free conditions; induction of IL 1 by C3a(C3adesArg) was not suppressed by polymyxin B; kinetics of IL 1 production and release in the presence of C3a(C3adesArg) differed from those observed in the presence of LPS; and sialated gangliosides, which inhibit IL 1 release induced by LPS, had no effect on the induction of IL 1 by C3a(C3adesArg). The C3a(C3adesArg) preparation used in this study mostly contained the desArg derivative, suggesting that, in contrast with the requirement for an intact C-terminal arginyl residue for the spasmogenic activity of C3a, both C3a and its C3adesArg derivative may interact with receptors on human monocytes. By inducing IL 1 production and release, C3a(C3adesArg) may contribute to the generation of the inflammatory process and the regulation of the immune response.

[The cranio-spinal joint: apropos of some anomalies].

The occipitocervical region settles down around the rostral extremity of the chorda, from components coming from the parachordal cartilage, the occipital somites and the first cervical somites. The evolution of the ossification points may be defective. This explains the malformations of this region, and their eventual mechanical repercussions. These malformations may be associated with malformations of the nervous system.

[The vascularization of the human tela choroidea of the lateral ventricle].

The human tela choroidea of the lateral ventricle is vascularized by arteries arising from the two systems which form the arterial circle of the base, i.e. the internal carotid system and the vertebral basilar system. This blood supply is given by one anterior choroidal artery and by several posterior choroidal arteries. These arteries anastomose to form multiple indirect and remote links between the carotid and vertebral basilar systems. The capillary networks of the tela choroidea of the lateral ventricle consists of a velar network and of a choroidal network. This duality is constantly observed in the choroid formations of the human brain. The venous vascularization of the tela is tributary of the venous circle of the base of the brain through choroidal veins that drain either into the internal cerebral veins or into the basal veins.

[Venous vascularization of the ilium].

The authors have tried to render visible the venous network of the ilium in order to understand the technique of high flow intra iliac infusion. To that aim, they have injected in each ilium of corpses, not previously embalmed, a coloured resin plastic transfused within two minutes. The corpses have then been dissected. The authors have remarked: 1. the whole vena cava inferior system was quickly and completely filled, 2. the filling-up of a dense network of periosteal small veins on the ilium, spreading to the muscular intra and extra-pelvic veins.

A physicomathematical approach to the structure of the mandible.

Classical methods of anatomical study and experimentation have reached an endpoint with respect to the advancement of our knowledge of certain aspects of bone, i.e. its mechanical properties, investigation of the constraints acting on bone and the organization of bone allowing resistance to such mechanical stress. Indeed, current knowledge is rather limited regarding bone as a material. Furthermore, bone from the cadaver cannot be considered a reliable source of study material since its physicochemical composition and mechanical properties are highly different from those of living bone. The types of experimentation used to date, although allowing to study the phenomena occurring on the surface of the bone, do not allow to evaluate those that occur within the bone without modification of its mechanical features. Finally, the number and complexity of the parameters to be taken into account in this respect largely supersede the possibilities of classical study techniques. Accordingly, new types of methodology are required to evaluate the many parameters involved, to perform the corresponding computations and resolve the great number of unknown variables. Such methodology must allow experimentation to be performed without modifying the object of study and to determine the phenomena occurring within the bone itself, i.e. the mandible. A method of computer assisted simulation of a physicomathematical model was used to analyse the structural properties of the mandible.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Vascularization of the tela choroidea of the 3rd ventricle in man].

The human choroïd tela of the third ventricle is essentially vascularized by the medial posterior choroïdal arteries, which are collatered branches of the posterior cerebral arteries. In some cases, the tela is also supplied by superior posterior choroïdal arteries which are branches of the pericallosal artery. These different arteries give off short and long choroïdal branches which supply the velate and choroïd capillary networks. The latter drain into the two internal cerebral veins by short and long choroïdal veins.
