The authors report a case of Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome in a 66-year old woman who had been admitted for polymyalgia rheumatica. Dermatological examination showed innumerable small ivory papullae bilaterally and symmetrically distributed over the back, the shoulders, the flexor aspect of the elbows, the wrists and the thighs. Biopsy of a papulla displayed hypertrophy of the elastic tissue condensed in the deep dermis. Electron microscopy showed dense collagen bundles together with an absence of microfibillae and of anchoring fibres in the superficial dermis. Standard radiology, computed tomography (CT) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) disclosed small areas of "stippled" bone densification in the lower middle part of the femoral heads, leading to a diagnosis of osteopoikilosis. Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome was described in 1928 as "dermatofibrosis lenticularis disseminata" associated with a bone-condensing disease called "osteopoikilosis". The condition is transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Light and electron microscopy of the skin show densification of collagen structures and elastic fibres that are very numerous and of abnormal structure. Osteopoikilosis may present under two different forms, punctate (Albers-Schomberg syndrome) or striated, corresponding anatomically to areas of compact bone. CT and NMR provide detailed information on the location and structure of bone condensation area.

Monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry techniques were used to analyze and compare the distribution of lymphocyte subpopulations of peripheral blood and synovial fluid (SF) from 70 patients, 43 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 10 with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or reactive synovitis, 10 with psoriatic arthritis and 7 with other inflammatory arthritic diseases. Patients with RA had significantly reduced number of CD8+ T cells and greater CD4/CD8 ratios in peripheral blood, a greater number of CD4+ T cells and lower CD4/CD8 ratio in SF. No significant difference was found between the groups with AS, reactive synovitis and psoriatic arthritis. The simultaneous analysis of peripheral blood and SF lymphocyte subpopulations allowed us to establish a transsynovial lymphocytic ratio which reflects CD4/CD8 variations on both peripheral blood and SF, 2 easily accessible compartments for physicians. This new ratio may distinguish RA from other inflammatory arthritic diseases.

This paper examines consumer brand categorization in view of price-quality evaluations. In particular it examines the relationship of the Brisoux and Laroche (1980) brand categorization process and the Bliemel (1984) conceptualization of consumers' price-quality evaluations, in a pharmaceutical marketing context. The findings suggest that: the Brisoux-Laroche conceptualization is supported in a pharmaceutical/industrial marketing scenario; and, the pharmacists' categorization of brands (i.e., into the evoked, hold, foggy, and reject sets) can be partially explained as an outcome of a price-quality evaluation process.

This study compared differential reinforcement of other (DRO) and incompatible (DRI) behaviors to these same two procedures combined with a mild interruption procedure on a 6-year-old developmentally disabled girl's self-stimulatory behaviors. The results showed that the combination was more effective for reducing all of the targeted behaviors. These low rates were maintained at a 4-month follow-up. In addition, several new forms of stereotypy that appeared as the targeted behaviors diminished decreased rapidly when interruption was applied to them. Finally, independent toy play increased as a by-product of the treatment.
Radish (Raphanus sativus cv Rond rose à bout blanc Vilmorin) seeds, as other cruciferae oil seeds, contain two major types of storage protein aggregates which can be separated by gel filtration into 12 and 1.7 Svedberg fractions. These two fractions have been characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, amino acid composition, and two bidimensional gel electrophoresis systems. These results were compared with those obtained with rapeseed storage proteins. Radish 12 Svedberg particles are made of a series of nine major polypeptides ranging from 33 to 30 kilodaltons. These polypeptides present charge heterogeneity. The 12 Svedberg particle is made of six subunits approximately 55 kilodaltons. Each subunit is a couple of two polypeptides linked by a disulfide bridge. The 1.7 Svedberg particle has a simpler composition. It is made of two polypeptides of 10 and 12 kilodaltons and smaller peptides of approximately 7 kilodaltons. Twelve and 1.7 Svedberg particles also differ in their amino acid composition, the 1.7 Svedberg being particularly rich in glutamic acid and proline. Its components are basic. The organization of the rapeseed storage protein is similar but more complex.
The methylation pattern of radish Raphanus sativus nuclear rDNA has been investigated using the Hpa II, Msp I, and Hha I restriction enzymes. The presence of numerous target sites for these enzymes has been shown using cloned rDNA fragments. A large fraction of the numerous rDNA units are heavily methylated, being completely resistant to Hpa II and Hpa I. However, specific sites are constantly available in another fraction of the units and are therefore unmethylated. The use of different probes allowed us to demonstrate that hypomethylated sites are present in different regions. Major hypomethylated Hha I sites have been mapped in the 5' portion of 25S rRNA coding sequence. Among the hypomethylated fraction, different methylation patterns coexist. It has been possible to demonstrate that methylation patterns are specific for particular units. The Hha I pattern of rDNA in tissues of different developmental stages was analyzed. Evidence for possible tissue specific differences in the methylation pattern is reported.
Major radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv National) proteins synthesized at the beginning of germination have been characterized by their migration in two-dimensional electrophoresis. The use of 15-minute labelings shows that these proteins are encoded by stored mRNA. They undergo little or no posttranslational modification. Other proteins become detectable only after 1 hour of imbibition, and are probably encoded by newly synthesized mRNA. Comparison with proteins synthesized during embryogenesis, late germination, or with those present in dry embryos allows the classification of the proteins encoded by stored mRNA into two sets:The first set is synthesized also during late embryogenesis and is present in dry embryos. Some of these polypeptides are no longer synthesized later in germination while the others continue to be synthesized. The corresponding stored mRNAs can be considered as remnants of mRNA actively translated during embryogenesis. The second set is synthesized only during early germination. Their messengers appear during late embryogenesis although they are apparently not translated at this stage, but translation can be induced by a desiccation treatment. These polypeptides may play a particular role during early germination.
A tenderizing method has been set up for beef meat by heating be at 55 degrees C. The present paper deals with informations about the pieces of meat which could treated by this method and particularly about the growth of Clostridium perfringens and Staphylococcus aureus. Our results show that pieces of meat the dimensions of which are 8.8.8. cm seem to be usable without danger for the consumers.
