Lithium carbonate in cluster headache: assessment of its short- and long-term therapeutic efficacy.

The short- and long-term effects of administration of lithium carbonate in cluster headache (CH) have been investigated. Of the 90 patients treated (78 males and 12 females), 68 had episodic CH and 22 had the chronic form of the disease. The doses used were almost always 900 mg/day. Eleven of the 22 patients with chronic CH showed a definite, constant improvement both short and long term. In 7 of the 22 patients, lithium treatment provided excellent results initially but was later followed by some transient worsening; in the remaining 4 only partial benefits were observed initially and treatment proved still less effective after a few months. The effects of cessation of lithium administration after at least five months of continuous treatment were studied in 9 cases. In 6 of them the attacks re-appeared immediately, whereas in 3 the attacks occurred again only after free intervals of four to six months. Of the 68 patients with episodic CH, 26 proved highly responsive to treatment, 26 only partially responsive, and 16 refractory. In 3 cases, after one to three years of continuous treatment, euthyroid goitre developed, which disappeared after the drug was discontinued.

Lithium salts in cluster headache treatment.

The short and long-term effects of Lithium carbonate in 90 patients with episodic (68 cases) and chronic (22 cases) cluster headache are reported. The results are discussed in particular in relation to the response of the episodic forms, the development of tolerance, the ability of the substance to modify the natural history of the disease, and the side-effects from long-term treatment.

Ergot derivatives in the prophylaxis of migraine: a multicentric study with a timed-release dihydroergotamine formulation.

In this multicentric random double-blind study versus placebo, the therapeutic activity of timed-release dihydroergotamine preparation 10 mg/per os/day has been tested in 90 patients affected by common migraine. The drug presented a prophylactic effect on recurrent headache, mainly on night and awakening migraine. A low incidence of side-effects with no weight changes or other effects on physiologic events was registered.

A comparative study of the efficiency of hydroxyprogesterone caproate and of chlormadinone acetate in the prevention of premature labor.

The efficacy of caproate of hydroxyprogesterone and acetate of chlormadinone in preventing premature labore was compared in a controlled trial. The survey was based on 211 pregnant women with a high risk of premature delivery discovered during clinical examination. There are no significant differences between the two groups in either length of gestation, delay between the beginning of treatment and delivery or other parameters related to prematurity. The absence of evidence suggesting any significant difference between the two treatments can have three possible causes (which are discussed): the methodology, the inefficacy of the two products or the equivalent efficacy of the two products.

[Isolation and identification of Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp. in dry sausages obtained in markets in the city of La Plata, Argentina].

A total of 60 samples of dry sausages were analyzed (50 of "salami" and 10 of "chorizo" "candelario" type) obtained at random in markets authorized for their commercialization, for the purpose of evidencing the presence of bacteria of the genus Listeria (Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp.). The results obtained in salami were the following: 10 (20%) isolates of Listeria spp., were characterized: 1 (2%) strain as L. monocytogenes type 1, 7 (14%) strains as L. innocua, 2 (4%) strains as L. welshimeri. In chorizo candelario type 6 (60%) isolates of Listeria spp., were characterized: 2 (33%) strains as L. monocytogenes type 1 and 4 (66%) strains as L. innocua. The total percentages of isolations were: 26.6% of Listeria spp., 5% of L. monocytogenes type 1, 18.3% of L. innocua and 3.3% of L. welshimeri. In conclusion, we consider that methodologies of control must be developed and implemented in order to guarantee the inocuity of these products.

[Effects of sauna on the values of blood circulation studied by the isometric exercise test].

Cardiovascular responses to isometric muscular exercise were evaluated during sauna. Nine healthy men aged 26 to 46 underwent testing during 5-6 saunas with one week interval between sessions. Each sauna included 2-6 heatings of 8-15 minutes (80-85 degrees C, humidity 15%) followed by complete cooling. Cardiovascular response during handgrip (45 seconds) were measured before sauna, after the first interval and 25 minutes after the end of sauna treatment.

[Cardiovascular effects of sodium chloride bath and underwater shower in coronary ischemia].

Two hundred and eighteen patients (209 males and 9 females, mean age 57.1 +/- 0.6 years) with I class coronary ischemia were subdivided into two groups of 109 subjects each. Group I received NaCl baths, group II underwater massage-showers. On days 2-3 and 23-24 of treatment all underwent incremental stress testing until exhaustion. In group I, only subjects with moderate maximal muscular power improved their stress endurance. In group II, stress endurance significantly improved in all subjects: all hemodynamic indices (cardiac, output, stroke volume, systemic vascular resistances) showed variations indicative of improved cardiorespiratory function and peripheral blood supply.

Determination of food contamination by mineral oil from jute sacks using coupled LC-GC.

Jute fibers are treated with about 5-7% of a high boiling mineral oil fraction ("batching oil") to render them flexible for making fabrics. Foods transported in jute bags are contaminated by this batching oil. A method involving automated on-line LC-GC is described for determining these hydrocarbons in various foods. Complete transfer of the LC fraction to GC is presupposed for obtaining the required sensitivity. Results are given for nuts, coffee, cocoa products, and rice. Contamination ranged between about 5 and 500 ppm.

[Total gastrectomy: a comparison between manual and mechanical sutures].

The authors report their experience of the use of mechanical staplers in total gastrectomy. The advantages of their use can above all be seen in anastomosis, in particular in high-risk areas like esophago-jejunal anastomosis, in which there is a lower incidence of dehiscence and mortality than when manual suturing techniques are used.
