Polyhydramnios: ultrasonically detected prevalence and neonatal outcome.

During obstetric ultrasound examinations of 10,214 patients at a tertiary perinatal unit, 102 cases of mild to severe polyhydramnios were detected, a prevalence rate of 1.04%. When referred patients were excluded, a prevalence rate of 0.93% was obtained. An etiology for polyhydramnios was apparent in 16.5% of patients with mild polyhydramnios. When polyhydramnios was characterized as moderate or severe, a definable cause was determined in 21 of 23 patients (91.3%).

Different classes of T lymphocytes have different mRNAs for the leukocyte-common antigen, T200.

The leukocyte common antigen, T200, is expressed on all white blood cells but not on other differentiated cells. Within the hematopoietic lineage, specific cell types display characteristic structural forms of the molecule on their surface. We show that murine cytotoxic T lymphocyte clones and helper T cell clones contain different size mRNA for this molecule, and that the early precursors of T200 glycoprotein made in the helper and cytotoxic T cells differ in Mr. Thus, in addition to differences in posttranslational modifications, it is highly likely that a difference in protein structure contributes to the distinct forms of T200 glycoprotein found on these functional T cell subsets.

Binding of calcitonin and calcitonin gene-related peptide to calvarial cells and renal cortical membranes.

Binding of calcitonin (CT) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) to rat hemicalvariae and renal membranes was examined in an effort to determine whether CT and CGRP interact with the same bone cell binding site, and to see whether the binding pattern was similar for bone and renal cortex. Specific binding of 125I-salmon CT to rat calvariae was inhibited by unlabeled salmon, porcine, or human CT, but not by rat CGRP. Binding of 125I-rat CGRP to calvariae was inhibited by CGRP and high doses of salmon CT, but not by human or porcine CT. Binding of 125I-salmon CT to renal membranes was inhibited by unlabeled salmon CT or rat CGRP, but no specific binding of 125I-rat CGRP could be detected. The results suggest that separate bone cell receptors for CT and CGRP exist and that CGRP can interact with renal receptors for CT.

Rapid microprocedure for isolating detergent-insoluble outer membrane proteins from Haemophilus species.

A rapid microprocedure for isolating detergent (sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate)-insoluble major outer membrane proteins from Haemophilus species produced results qualitatively identical to those obtained with a commonly used preparative isolation procedure. Proteins isolated by both procedures were compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after staining with Coomassie brilliant blue R-250. The time for outer membrane protein isolation was substantially reduced with the rapid procedure, allowing a larger number of membrane preparations to be obtained rapidly for routine analysis.

Susceptibility of Haemophilus aegyptius to trooleandomycin: lack of taxonomic value.

Two hundred and nine strains of Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus aegyptius were screened for trooleandomycin susceptibility. Four strains were shown to be sensitive to the drug. Of these four, two were Haemophilus aegyptius (ATCC 11116, NCTC 8134), and the other two were Haemophilus influenzae biotype I (1-605) and IV (80-212. One strain of Haemophilus aegyptius (NCTC 8135) was resistant to trooleandomycin. Restriction enzyme assays and DNA homology were carried out to establish relationships between the strains. It is concluded that trooleandomycin susceptibility has no taxonomic value to differentiate between Haemophilus aegyptius and biotype III Haemophilus influenzae.

Varicography in the management of recurrent varicose veins.

Forty lower extremities in 29 patients with recurrent varicose veins have been investigated by varicography. In 29 lower extremities the recurrent varicosities were on the long saphenous venous system and in 11 lower extremities on the short saphenous system. The recurrences consisted of varicose segments or tributaries of the long or short saphenous veins, varicose tributaries at the sites of previous ligations of varicose veins, and varicosities associated with incompetent perforating veins in the midthigh and calf. It is suggested that varicography is a useful method for demonstrating the sites of recurrent varicose veins and for enabling definitive surgery to be performed.

The incidence of cardiac arrhythmias during intravenous digital subtraction angiography: a comparison of peripheral and central injections.

Intravenous digital subtraction arteriography (IV-DSA) was carried out in 204 patients with arteriosclerotic peripheral vascular disease using the non-ionic contrast medium iopamidol 370. In 124 patients the injection was made into an antecubital vein and in 80 into the right atrium. Rhythm strip electrocardiograms showed no significant difference in incidence or type of arrhythmias between either injection method (p greater than 0.95).

A comparative trial of the diagnostic quality of and tolerance for two low concentration low osmolality contrast media for phlebography.

We report a prospective randomised double blind study comparing the diagnostic quality of and tolerance for ascending phlebography in 100 patients using two different low osmolality contrast media, ioxaglate and iohexol, at a concentration of 200 mg I/ml. The immediate and delayed side effects were minimal in both groups and the difference between the two media was not statistically significant. All the phlebograms were of diagnostic quality. We conclude that both ioxaglate and iohexol are suitable agents for leg phlebography in low concentrations.

HLA sharing and spontaneous abortion in humans.

Twenty-one Caucasian couples with two or more idiopathic fetal losses and with either no live-born children or with only one live-born child were typed for HLA-A, B, and DR antigens, and mixed lymphocyte responses of the maternal lymphocytes to stimulation by paternal lymphocytes were studied. The mixed lymphocyte response results showed that women who experienced habitual fetal loss had normal immune responses, thereby lending less credence to the idea that a defective immunologic response is involved in problem pregnancies. The data were pooled and analyzed with those of similar reports, and there was a strong indication that aborting couples shared a greater portion of the chromosome that contains the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) than would be expected in random matings.

The diagnosis of aortic graft-enteric fistulae by computed tomography.

A number of techniques have been used to diagnose aortic graft-enteric fistulae. These are reviewed and their value assessed. Three patients are described in whom the diagnosis was correctly made from characteristic appearances seen on a computed tomography (CT) scan. Further experience may show that CT scanning has an important role in the detection of this condition.

Evidence from cDNA clones that the rat leukocyte-common antigen (T200) spans the lipid bilayer and contains a cytoplasmic domain of 80,000 Mr.

The leukocyte-common antigen (L-CA or T200) includes a family of lymphoid and myeloid cell surface glycoproteins with apparent molecular weights from 180,000 to 240,000. We report a partial protein sequence for thymocyte L-CA containing 1073 amino acids predicted from cDNA clones isolated using an oligonucleotide probe. Only one segment (residues 347-368) is likely to cross the membrane, and peptide data suggest that sequences N-terminal to this are outside the cell, with residues 369-1073 inside. The cytoplasmic domain includes possible phosphorylation sites and an internal homology between residues 385-671 and 676-986. Analysis of B lymphocyte cDNA clones suggests that B cell and thymocyte mRNAs are identical in 3' sequences, but size differences in Northern blots suggest 5' sequences may differ.

Incompetent perforating veins: comparison of varicography and ascending phlebography.

A comparison of the accuracy of incompetent perforating vein visualization using varicography and ascending phlebography is reported. A technique for varicography is described. Sixty-one legs of 50 patients were examined using both methods. In the calf, varicography and ascending phlebography were almost equally accurate, but for the demonstration of incompetent perforating veins of the gastrocnemius muscle and midthigh, varicography was considerably more accurate. It is concluded that varicography is a safe, simple, and accurate method for demonstrating incompetent perforating veins and complements the more conventionally employed ascending phlebography.

Descending phlebography in the assessment of long saphenous vein incompetence.

Fifty-eight legs were investigated by descending phlebography using a standard Valsalva maneuver in 38 patients with varicose veins who were suspected of having primary long saphenous vein incompetence on the basis of clinical examinations, tourniquet tests, and Doppler sonography. In 21 (36%) of 58 legs the clinical diagnosis was confirmed; in the rest, there was no evidence of long saphenous vein incompetence. Descending phlebography using a standard Valsalva maneuver is a reliable method of demonstrating long saphenous vein incompetence and should be performed before surgical treatment in all patients in whom there is clinical doubt about the presence or absence of this condition.

A comparative trial of the diagnostic quality of and tolerance for two concentrations of ioxaglate when used for phlebography.

We report a prospective, randomised, double blind study comparing the diagnostic quality of and tolerance for ascending phlebography in 100 patients using two different concentrations of ioxaglate, 320 mg/ml and 200 mg/ml. The immediate and delayed side effects were minimal in both groups and the difference between the two concentrations was not statistically significant. All the phlebograms were of diagnostic quality. We conclude that, with its lower osmolality, lower viscosity and lower cost, ioxaglate 200 mg/ml is a suitable medium for routine use in ascending phlebography of lower limbs.
