The Gestalt approach to stuttering.

This article describes the application of Gestalt therapy concepts to the treatment of stuttering. Within this framework stuttering is seen as an organized self-system rather than a symptom. This self-system is maintained and reinforced by the stutter's experience of this physical self, self-expectancies, self-messages, projections on others, and total viewing of self as a limited and inadequate person. The individual enmeshes himself or herself into this system and restricts himself to familiar behaviors, in this case stuttering, because he has no framework for other ways of functioning. The Gestalt therapeutic framework as a basis of unlocking the individual's limited style of functioning is explored.

Use of a miniaturized detector in facial bone scanning.

A high resolution cadmium telluride probe was used in conjunction with standard bone imaging methods in two cases of facial asymmetry. The probe improved localization of the abnormalities and led to rational treatment.

Individual and family growth: a Gestalt approach.

Gestalt therapy is described as a comprehensive framework of theory and techniques for experiential family threapy. Like other experientially oriented therapies, it is systems-oriented, immediate-experience-oriented, and affect-oriented. Unlike others, this method regards the client system's emergent processes as the central focus, and it emphasizes that growth occurs as the family and its members are helped to greater self-awareness and responsibility for their own functioning.

Semiconductor probe measurements in beagle dogs with periodontal disease.

A miniaturized semiconductor probe was used to measure alveolar bone uptake of a bone-seeking radiopharmaceutical in dogs with destructive periodontal disease. Radiopharmaceutical uptake in localized, advanced disease was greater than in incipient disease and was generalized, with increased uptake occurring in radiographically normal areas and in areas with bone loss.

Calorigenic response in obese and nonobese women.

The calorigenic response to a high protein test meal was studied in women with a history of childhood onset obesity. Obese and nonobese individuals were fasted overnight and basal oxygen consumptions determined the following morning. A semisynthetic 823 kcal high protein test meal was ingested within a 1-hr period followed by hourly determinations of oxygen consumption and plasma levels of insulin, free fatty acids, triglycerides, glucose, amino acids, and urea nitrogen. Amino acid levels increased faster and to a higher plateau in the nonobese group, while insulin levels increased and eventually decreased in a similar fashion in both groups. No differences in basal metabolic rate were detected. The postprandial increment in oxygen consumption was significantly less among the obese subjects. Diminished calorigenesis after each meal would result in accumulation of extra calories provided that caloric consumption is not appropriately decreased. These data suggest that a physiological aberration of energy metabolism may contribute to the development of childhood onset obesity.

Growth requirements of some small-colony-forming variants of Staphylococcus aureus.

Nine stable, auxotrophic, small-colony-forming variants of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. They were of two types. One type, from broth cultures containing varying concentrations of gentamicin or kanamycin, required heme for normal growth. The second type, from the blood culture of a patient who had been treated with penicillin and oxacillin, required long-chain unsaturated fatty acids for normal growth. These small-colony-forming variants differed from their parents with respect to specific metabolic activities, many of which may be attributed to an impaired electron transport system and related functions. A laboratory procedure for detecting possible small-colony variants in clinical specimens was proposed.

Uptake of 99mTe-Sn-EHDP in beagles with advanced periodontal disease.

Bone seeking radiopharmaceuticals were used in conjunction with skeletal imaging techniques to study bone mineral metabolism in beagle jaws. In beagles with chronic destructive periodontal disease, the tooth-supporting bone exhibited an increased uptake of technetium-99m-tin-diphosphonate when compared to control dogs. Scan images of soft tissue and vascular pools in the diseased jaws were normal. When quantitative densitometric data derived from bone scan images were compared, it was found that values reflecting radionuclide uptake in dogs with chronic destructive periodontal disease were six times greater than corresponding values in control dogs.

Renal transport of organic acids and bases in genetically obese mice.

Accumulation of p-aminohippurate (PAH) and N-methylnicotinamide (NMN) by renal cortical slices was used to estimate transport capacity for organic anions and cations, respectively. In a previous study, renal organic anion transport appeared to be selectively depressed in animals rendered obese by high fat feeding. However, the effects of obesity could not be discretely separated from the effects of the 30% fat diet used to produce the obesity. Genetically obese hyperglycemic mice provided a model to determine the effect of obesity on renal transport systems without the complication due to diet. Accumulation of both PAH and NMN was depressed in renal cortical slices from genetically obese mice. Addition of plasma from thin or obese animals increased PAH accumulation by slices from thin animals. Accumulation by slices from obese animals was unaffected by addition of plasma. Oxygen consumption with acetate in the medium was less in kidneys from obese mice than kidneys from thin mice. Thus, in addition to inhibition of transport capacity, renal cortex of genetically obese mice has a biochemical defect that prevents response to stimulators. It is concluded that several renal functions are depressed in the genetically obese hyperglycemic mouse. Whether the depressed function results from the obesity or is concomitant with the gene for obesity is as yet undertermined.
