The use of information generated by a patient classification system.

Patient classification systems (PCS) generate information that can be used to make decisions about the provision of nursing services. Expenditures for information technology are significant, but no previous research had been conducted regarding the actual use of information generated by an automated PCS. This article reports the findings of a study describing how and why information obtained from a PCS is used in hospital decision making and discusses the implications for nurse administrators.

University/community poster sessions.

Graduate nursing students created posters to illustrate their practicum projects at the end of a field course. Posters were presented at a poster session on a university campus in Philadelphia, open to preceptors, other nurse colleagues, and the university community. Students recognized the advantages of the poster session, including learning how to conduct a professional presentation in public and how to construct an attractive, literature-based poster to hold the attention of colleagues attending the session.

Health outcomes skills for care management.

There are several skills nurses can develop or expand to improve their ability to manage outcomes. This is an exciting area for nurses and one that is valued during times of cost reduction in healthcare. In addition to increasing skills in the health outcomes management arena, nurses will benefit from a continual increase in knowledge of case management, clinical pathways, and guidelines. The healthcare market-place is likely to reward nurses with these skills.
