Surgical treatment of the spontaneous pneumothoraces and its pathological findings.

Open thoracotomies were performed in 124 out of 198 spontaneous pneumothorax episodes from Jan. 1967 to Dec. 1976. By reviewing histological findings of resected specimens, elastofibrosis was remarkable in particular and bullae seem to arise from this elastofibrosis. This change could be irreversible and causes frequent recurrence. So only conservative treatment is not enough and is needed surgical treatment. Regarding operation we prefer bullectomy and/or partial parietal pleurectomy. The latter is useful to reserve pulmonary function and can gain necessary adhesion of the place where frequent bullae formation are observed. And after performing parietal pleurectomy, there is no recurrence.

[Isolation of enterococci from clinical materials and their susceptibility to antibiotics (author's transl)].

Three hundred and fifty-one strains of enterococci were isolated from 2,337 clinical materials including urine, blood, pus and other during 6 months of spring and summer in 1977. Urine was the most frequent source of the organism among them. As for species, S. liquefaciens was isolated most frequently (45.5%), being followed by S. zymogenes (26.5%) and S. faecalis (21.5%) in order. The susceptibility of the isolates was tested with 10 antibiotics. In general, the majority of the strains were resistant to several antibiotics, but almost all the strains were susceptible to ampicillin and benzylpenicillin. The susceptibility of S. liquefaciens, S. zymogenes and S. faecalis to 10 antibiotics was similar with each other in pattern, while that of S. faecium and S. durans was considerably lower.

Electron transfer between protein and DNA in gamma-irradiated deoxyribonucleoprotein.

When deoxyribonucleoprotein-proflavine complexes were studied by electron spin-resonance spectroscopy following gamma-irradiation, it was found that stable free radicals were not formed at random on the complex but were preferentially located on proflavine. Since proflavine intercalalated to DNA bases serves as a final acceptor of electrons liberated by ionization, the result of our experiment was regarded as suggesting that the electron transfer from the protein moiety to the DNA moiety occurred in the irradiated deoxyribonucleoprotein.

Activities of antennal and ocellar interneurones in the protocerebrum of the honey-bee.

1. Unit responses to olfactory and mechanical stimuli of the antennae, and illumination of the ocelli, were recorded extracellularly in the protocerebrum of the honey-bee. 2. Bimodal units responded both to antennal and to ocellar stimuli; antennal units responded to the former and the ocellar units to the latter. Some antennal units responded to olfactory stimuli (olfactory units), and others responded to mechanical stimuli (mechanical units). 3. Ocellar units in the brain showed phasic responses at the start and/or cessation of illumination. Six types of responses were found. 4. About two-thirds of the bimodal units showed the same type of response to stimulation of the antennae as to stimulation of the ocelli. Most of them showed excitation by each stimulus. 5. Bimodal units were distributed around the alpha-lobe in the protocerebral lobe, whereas the antennal and the ocellar units were widely distributed. 6. By turning off the ocellar illumination, background discharge frequency, and the pattern and magnitude of responses to antennal stimuli, were changed. The activities of the ocellar units were altered by inputs from the antenna. 7. It was postulated that antennal and ocellar inputs converge and interact with each other in the protocerebral lobe of the honey-bee.

Synaptic organization of the fleshfly ocellus.

The synaptic organization of the fleshfly (Boettcherisca peregrina) ocellus has been studied by transmission electron microscropy. Three types of neuronal element are recognized in the ocellus: (1) 70-100 retinula axons (2) four thick ocellar nerve fibres and(3) several thin ocellar nerve fibres. Synaptic connections accompanied by characteristic presynaptic ribbons have been found between these three elements in five combinations. Four of these are numerous (retinula axons symapsing onto thick ocellar nerve fibres or onto thin ocellar fibres; thin ocellar nerve fibres synapsing onto thick ocellar nerve fibres or onto other thin ocellar fibres). On or two of the thin ocellar nerve fibres are mainly presynaptic elements. The remaining thin fibres are both pre-and postsynaptic. These observations suggest that the thick ocellar nerve fibres are afferent and at least one or two of the thin ocellar nerve fibres are efferent. The function of the remaining thin fibres is not known. The fifth combination is a feedback synapse from thin ocellar nerve fibres onto retinula oxons. In addition, neuro-glial synapses have been found between thin ocellar nerve fibres and glial cells. The latter two combinations are less common and may provide alternative neuronal pathways for processingocellar input.
