[Tobacco smoking and lung cancer: relative risk for Kreyberg groups I and II (author's transl)].

This paper provides additional information about the not yet completely solved relation of smoking and lung cancer of group Kreyberg II. This problem was analysed for the first time in Austria. In retrospective case-control-study datas were collected about smoking habits of 494 male patients with verivied lung cancer (440 cases belonging to group Kreyberg I and 54 to group Kreyberg II) and 1000 controls. By a computer program the relative risk of smokers compared to non smokers, additionaly in relation to the amount of cigarettes smoked, was calculated for: all lung cancer types, groups Kreyberg I and Kreyberg II. The relative risk for smokers compared to non smokers was for Kreyberg I-tumours 7.78 and for Kreyberg II-tumours 3.42 (statistically significant). In relation to the amount of cigarettes smoked, Kreyberg I-tumours had a significant risk at an amount up to 5000 consumed cigarette packs, Kreyberg II-tumours at an amount of more than 20000 cigarette packs.

[Influence of the mode of collection on the result of blood cultures].

In a prospective study of 133 patients with suspicion of a septic process the influence of the withdrawal modus on the bacteriologic result was examined using an open blood culture system. For patients without pretreatment with antibiotics or without high temperature the "one time" withdrawal of the blood culture should be preferred to the "multi-time" method. A multi-time withdrawal showed similar and better evidence quotas with patients without fever and under influence of antibiotics. The result depends on the number of blood cultures for each patient. If there is presupposed a minimum of 2 positive blood cultures for each patient as indication of a septic process, a 83 per cent indication quota is attained with 12 one-time blood cultures, a 70 per cent indication quota with 8 blood cultures, and a 53 per cent indication quota with 4 blood cultures. In multi-time withdrawal the comparable indication quotas are 55, 45 resp. 32 per cent.

[On the possibility of a rapid method for sensitivity testing of mycobacteria by determination of H3-uracil incorporation (author's transl)].

Dubos-Tween Albumin cultures (8.0 ml) were set up with 10(6) viable bacteria per ml. After incubation for 48 hours 0.25 muC H3-uracil per ml was added. At the same time the antituberculoticum was introduced. The final concentrations were 1 microgram, 0.25 microgram and 0.025 microgram for INH; 4.0 microgram for SM; 32 microgram and 0.32 microgram for RMP; 2.0 microgram and 1.0 microgram for ETH; 0.5 microgram and 0.25 microgram for PAS. The incorporation rate clearly depended on the degree of sensitivity of the bacteria. Determing the incorporation rate of H3-uracil allowed the result to be read after only one week (fig. 1 and fig. 2) instead of 4 to 6 weeks using the conventional method on solid media. It was also found that turbidity measurements of the cultures (fig. 2) gave an equaly reliable result enabling this latter method to be performed in less well equipped laboratories.

[Pharmacokinetics of indomethacin and indomethacin metabolites administered continuously to patients with healthy or damaged kidneys].

After oral administration of 75 mg Indomethacin dlimination half-life of the unchanged drug is not altered in patients with severely impaired renal function. In patients with renal insufficiency half-life of Indomethacin plus metabolites is twice that of the normal value. Repeated daily administration of 75 mg for 8 days does not influence Indomethacin kinetics. In the control group and in patients with moderate by impaired renal function Indomethacin half-life does not change during chronic administration.

[Premature rupture of fetal membranes and premature labor].

The portion of early rupture of the membranes among 521 premature births from 1962 to 1971 was 43.4%. The statistically sure effects of the early rupture of the fetal membranes to some irregularities in pregnancy and delivery on 214 premature births are reported, compared with 202 premature births without early rupture of the membranes. Twins are not considered. The therapeutic management of that time in the hospital consisted of staying in bed without tokolytics or antibiotics. After premature rupture of fetal membranes occured very often: irregular obstetrical presentation, hemorrhage and fever during labour, cesarean section and forceps delivery; the perinatal morbidity was increased. From that aspects for prophylaxis and therapy were deduced.

[Effect of long term treatment with trenimon in chronic progressive polyarthritis].

It is reported on the therapeutic effects with trenimon in patients with rheumatoid arthritis half a year and one year after the end of the treatment. When critically judged the quota of success was 32.5% for the total judgement after half a year. Significant relations dosis-effect could be ascertained only for the parameters of clinical activity up to 1 year and humoral inflammatory signs after half a year. When the therapeutic success is assessed in any case the additional therapeutic expenditure must be taken into consideration. Before the beginning of the therapy there was no ascertained relation between success of therapy and duration of the disease, sex, age, activity and function.

Diurnal changes of the 2,3-diphosphoglycerate concentration in human red cells and the influence of posture.

The 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentration, oxygen half saturation pressure at pH 7.4 (P50), pH in plasma and red cells, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) of venous blood were determined during unrestricted daily activity (series I) throughout 24 hrs as well as during prolonged bed rest until noon (series II). In series I almost synchronous dirunal behavior of P50 2,3-DPG, and plasma pH as well as red cell pH became significantly apparent with highest values in the afternoon. The [2,3-DPG] yielded most pronounced alterations, which made up to 13.5% of the average day value. During prolonged recumbency the [2,3-DPG] showed a nonsignificant tendency to decline; the P50 remained unchanged throughout that period. The possible reason for the missing [2,3-DPG] increase is a reduced change of red cell pH in series II. An influence of a posture dependent aldosterone secretion either directly on the 2,3-DPG metabloism of indirectly via mediating the red cell pH and thus ruling the formation of this organic PHOSPHORIS COMPOUND IS DISCUSSED.

[Quantitative and virus specific serum IgM detection in newborns (author's transl)].

Serum IgM concentration was determined in umbilical cord blood samples from 1000 newborns. 34 cases presenting elevated IgM values (greater than or equal to 30 mg%) were tested for virus specific IgM antibodies. We could demonstrate such virus specific IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (4), against Rubella, Influenza A and Influenza B (2 each) and against Coxsackie virus (1). The quantitation of IgM in blood samples of child bearing women showed no elevated values compared to those of non-pregnant women of similar age groups.
