Peritoneal dialysis in obstructive jaundice: an experimental study.

Rats were subjected to common bile duct ligation, after which intermittent peritoneal dialysis with a buffered solution containing rat plasma proteins was carried out in an attempt to reduce plasma bilirubin levels. Plasma bilirubin increased significantly (P less than 0.01) on the seventh day and was still rising 12 days after ligation of the common bile duct. Dialysis was performed during the second postoperative week. Provided that rat plasma protein was present in the dialysing fluid, dialysis significantly reduced (P less than 0.01) the levels of total plasma bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin and serum GPT in the experimental animals.

Heterochromatin in mitotic chromosomes of Drosophila nasuta.

The heterochromatin in mitotic cells of larval neural ganglia of Drosophila nasuta has been analysed by C-banding and by fluorescence studies. All chromosomes, except the 'dot'-like 4th chromosome pair, carry large blocks of heterochromatin which are darkly stained by C-banding, and which fluoresce uniformly brightly with Hoechst 33258, quinacrine mustard, and acridine orange. These heterochromatic segments make up about 40% of the total metaphase chromosome length. The heterochromatic segments also fluoresce brightly with all the dyes at the anaphase stage. In interphase nuclei, all the heterochromatic segments form a common, compact and homogeneous mass which fluoresces brightly with the three fluorochromes used. The size of the bright chromocentre is similar with all the dyes. It is suggested that the heterochromatic segments of different chromosomes are relatively homogeneous in their DNA base sequences, which are likely to be A-T rich in view of their bright fluorescence with Hoechst 33258 as well as quinacrine mustard.

Localisation of non-replicating heterochromatin in polytene cells of Drosophila nasuta by fluorescence microscopy.

A simple fluorescence technique is decribed to localise in situ the non-replicating alpha heterochromatin in the chromocentre region of Drosophila nasuta polytene nuclei. After incorporating 5-bromodeoxyuridine in larval salivary gland cells for one or two cycles of replication, the polytene nuclei are examined for Hoechst 33258 flourescence at pH 7.0. The non-replicating alpha heterochromatin remains brightly fluorescing as it does not incorporate any 5-bromodeoxyuridine while the rest of the replicating chromatin shows dull fluorescence due to the quenching of Hoechst 33258 fluorescence by the bromodeoxyuridine substituted DNA.

Short-term effects of norethisterone oenanthate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on glucose, insulin, growth hormone, and lipids.

The effects on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in 24 healthy female subjects of the long-acting steroid contraceptives norethisterone oenanthate (200 mg) (11 subjects) and depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (150 mg) (13 subjects) were studied. The subjects were between the ages of 18 and 25 years, with a history of normal menstrual periods. Pretreatment levels of plasma cholesterol, plasma triglycerides, phospholipids, blood glucose, insulin, and growth hormone were compared with those obtained 3 weeks and 12 weeks after the initial injections. There were no statistically significant differences from the pretreatment levels in any of the values obtained at 3 weeks and 12 weeks in either group.

Serum lipid profiles in patients of myocardial infarction in the Chandigarh area (Northern India).

To study the incidence of hyperlipoproteinaemia in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) in the Chandigarh area, estimations of various lipids have been carried out in 83 patients. A serial study has been carried out in 31 patients. Serum lipoproteins and uric acid were also estimated. Results show an incidence of only 18% hypercholesterolaemia in patients with MI and 15% in normal subjects. Age-wise distribution of hypercholesterolaemia was slightly higher in 41-60 years old patients when compared with other age groups. No other abnormality in lipid profile was observed. Hyperuricaemia was not observed. These results, therefore, differ markedly from those of similar studies published from the western world.

Satisfactory radioiodination of rabbit fibrinogen using chloramine-T.

A method for radioiodination of fibrinogen using chloramine-T is described. Samples of greater than 90 per cent clottable counts were obtained. Electrophoretic mobility and immunodiffusion showed that the entire radioactivity was present in the fibrinogen band. In vivo studies on the turnover of this labeled product in rabbits showed a half-life of 52.8 to 61.7 hours in two batches of animals. The results compare very well with the reported results obtained from fibrinogen labeled with radioactive iodine by the iodine-monochloride method. The advantages of the new method are indicated.

Unusual problems in renal hypertension.

Ten cases of renal hypertension with uncommon causes were presented and unusual problems in their diagnosis and surgical management were discussed. These causes included segmental stenosis involving aberrant renal artery, renal artery stenosis in association with renal arteriovenous fistula, postoperative renal hypertension and hypertension secondary to renal tuberculosis. A high index of clinical suspicion and increasing awareness will help in diagnosing such rare and unusual cases of renal hypertension.
