The release of prostaglandins in human aqueous humour following intraocular surgery. Effect of indomethacin.

Inflammatory reaction to ocular trauma is known to be related to prostaglandins. To further evaluate this phenomenon in human, PGE1 and E2 were measured by R.I.A. after silicic acid chromatography in aqueous humour of 26 patients before and 3 days after surgery for unilateral senile cataract (posterior chamber implant after extracapsular surgery). 13 out of these patients were treated with indomethacin by enteral route and 13 were not treated. PGE2 levels increased in all non-treated patients from: m less than 214 pg/ml before surgery, to 2666 +/- 869 pg/ml (range: 257 - 8728) p less than 0.001 after surgery. PGE2 levels did not increase in indomethacin-treated patients. PGE1 levels did not increase significantly in non-treated as in treated patients. 1) Intra-ocular surgery is followed in human by a constant increase of the only PGE2 in the aqueous humour. 2) Indomethacin inhibits this increase. 3) The post-surgical increase in the permeability of blood-aqueous barrier appears to be related to a release of PGE2.

[The sexual activity of Culicoides nubeculosus (Mg.) (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) (author's transl)].

The sexual activity of C. nubeculosus has been studied in relation to the age of males and females. The criteria chosen were stoutness of spermatheca and frequency of mating, respectively. A unit N. M. H. (number of matings/male/hour) has been determined. Sexual activity reaches its maximum on 2nd day of imaginal life and is then slowly decreasing. This maximum activity on 2nd day rapidly decreases in the hours following blood meal, down to a rate which then remains nearly constant.

[Protozoa of the human oral cavity (epidemiological correlations and pathogenic possibilities].

The oral protozoa frequency has been studied in 300 patients consulting for oral problems. Entamoeba gingivalis has been isolated more frequently in culture than Trichomonas tenax (50.7% against 28%). The age range which showed the highest frequency in protozoa was the 30-34 year old group for the amoeba and the 45-54 year old group for the flagellae. The endemia increased progressively in relation to the OHIS index. Trichomonas tenax is three times more frequent in case of deep periodontal diseases whereas, Entamoeba gingivalis reached its highest frequency in the case of gingivitis. The pathogenic potentials of these protozoa have been discussed in the light of these correlations and some therapeutical arguments.

[Ecology of the ceratopogonids of the Alsace plain. III. Life-cycle of the Culicoides (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) from a fluvial breeding-place (author's transl)].

In the East of France, Culicoides clastrieri, C. odibilis, C. cubitalis, C. subfascipennis and C. musilator have 2 generations per year; a spring generation and a summer generation. A part of the summer population undergoes a aestivo-hibernation which is terminated around december. The possibility of a winter diapausa is evocated.

[Demodex folliculorum and rosacea: experimental and immunological studies].

When the immunological mechanism of the demodectic mange is well-known in dogs, few things are known about the role of Demodex mites in the pathogenesis of rosacea: the purpose of this study is the research of immunological reactions against Demodex antigens in 31 patients (24 papulopustular rosaceas and 7 granulomatous demodectic rosaceas histologically ascertained). Cultures or survival in vitro of human Demodex mites could not be obtained; therefore demodectic cysts of diseased goats (Demodex caprae) were gathered and soluble antigens were extracted by lyophilization. By different immunoserological methods, Demodex specific antibodies could be demonstrated in sera of rosacea (22%), of diseased goats and of rabbits sensitized with small amounts of demodectic antigen. Frequently cross-reactions were observed.

Circulating levels of corticotrophin and cortisol after infusions of L-DOPA, dopamine and noradrenaline, in man.

Intravenous infusions of noradrenaline and dopamine in normal saline, and L-dopa in sodium lactate, were given to seven patients with Parkinsonism, and to five healthy volunteers. Infusions of saline and lactate were given, in a similar manner, to six additional healthy volunteers, who formed a control group. Dopamine and noradrenaline were each given in gradually increasing doses, for periods of 4 min, until a 30% increase in systolic blood pressure had occurred. L-Dopa (320 mg) was given a constant rate of infusion over 80 min. Plasma fluorogenic corticosteroids (cortisol) increased with dopamine , and decreased with noradrenaline. These changes were significantly different from the control group in the case of noradrenaline only. ACTH values changed in a similar manner. L-Dopa produced a consistent rise in both ACTH and cortisol that was significantly different from control subjects. The implications of these observations are discussed.

Levodopa therapy for Parkinsonism in the Shy-Drager syndrome.

The results of levodopa treatment in five patients with Parkinsonism of the Shy-Drager syndrome are reported. There was no improvement in the neurological signs or functional disability in any patient. Mean values for lying and standing blood pressure increased significantly in three of the five patients during treatment, and were unchanged in the other two patients. The significance of these results is discussed. It is concluded that levodopa is not of therapeutic value in patients with this disorder.
