Soluble interleukin-2 receptor in serum of patients with esophageal carcinoma.

We measured serum levels of sIL-2R in 28 patients with squamous cell esophageal carcinoma and in 12 controls. Sera for presence of sIL-2R were examined using DAKO Interleukin-2-receptor (CD25) ELISA. The samples were analyzed for CEA and SCC by using IMx System (Abbot). The mean values of sIL-2R in esophageal carcinoma group were significantly increased in comparison with control group. Our results suggest that sIL-2R may be useful in monitoring and prognosis estimation of disease in esophageal carcinoma and could be a valuable addition to the current spectrum of cancer markers.

Evaluation of squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma.

The usefulness of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) antigen as a tumor marker was investigated in 72 patients with histologically verified non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Increased level of SCC-Ag was observed in 41%, mostly in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (69%). Positive serum SCC-Ag was correlated with lymph node metastases and with the stage of disease. The positive rate of SCC-Ag observed in patients without and with nodal metastases was 52.9% and 84.2%, respectively. Positive SCC-Ag level was observed in 50% of Stage I, 71.4% of Stage II and 78.9% of Stage III patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. The study proved that preoperative SCC-Ag determination in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and the course of levels of this marker during postoperative follow-up was of importance. A high preoperative and postoperative SCC-Ag value suggested a worse prognosis.

Value of CEA and SCC-Ag in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and serum of patients with lung carcinoma.

To evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of simultaneous determinations of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag), we studied 25 patients with lung carcinoma and 12 with nonmalignant lung diseases. The measurements were made in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). The results showed that positive rates with lavage CEA and SCC-Ag in lung carcinoma patients were higher in comparison with those markers in serum. The combination of lavage CEA and SCC-Ag taken together with the results of bronchoscopy (histology and cytology) showed the highest discriminating power between malignant and nonmalignant lung diseases. The sensitivity of bronchoscopy increased from 48 to 84% with at least 1 positive marker. It appears that the simultaneous determination of CEA and SCC-Ag levels in serum and BAL in lung carcinoma patients may be of considerable importance in diagnosis.

Adenocarcinoma

[Interferon--clinical application].

In another of a series of papers on interferon the authors review the treatment with synthetic interferon of viral and neoplastic diseases. The method of interferon obtaining on an industrial scale is described.

Stable preparation of yeast mitochondria and mitoplasts synthesizing specific polypeptides.

Yeast mitochondria isolated in the presence of 0.6 M sorbitol and 0.5% bovine serum albumin can be stored in liquid nitrogen without loss of translational activity. Frozen mitochondria retain the respiratory control and the mutant pattern of polypeptide synthesis identical to those detected for fresh preparations. Stored mitochondria may be efficiently transformed into a stable preparation of mitoplasts actively synthesizing mitochondrial polypeptides.

Protein composition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondrial ribosomes.

Protein composition of mitochondrial ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was analysed by two-dimensional electrophoresis. The small (37S) mitoribosomal subunit contains 36 different polypeptides with molecular weights ranging from 10,000 to 60,000. The large (50S) subunit is composed of 41 proteins with molecular weights from 10,000 to 43,000. The molecular weights of mitoribosomal small and large subunits are 1.85 MDa and 2.35 MDa, respectively. Proteins represent 60-62% and 42-45% of the total mass of 37S and 50S subunits respectively. On the basis of the protein content and molecular weights of individual proteins we conclude that all mitoribosomal proteins are present in the mitoribosome in equimolar proportions.

Restriction enzyme analysis of mitochondrial DNA of members of the genus Aspergillus as an aid in taxonomy.

Restriction endonuclease patterns of mitochondrial DNA from seven species of the genus Aspergillus (A. nidulans, A. wentii, A. awamori, A. niger, A. oryzae, A. tamarii and A. echinulatus) have been compared in order to test the phylogenetic relationships between these species. The fraction of restriction fragments common between all pairs of species from this set ranged from 0 to 1. The use of this approach for the taxonomy of the genus Aspergillus is discussed. The postulated phylogenetic relationships differ significantly in two cases from the classification of the genus presented by Raper & Fennell (1965).

[Suitability of coarse rapeseed meals from various procedures for fattening broiler chickens. 2. Goitrogenic effect of rapeseed meals].

In a fattening experiment with rapeseed meals produced by different techniques (cf. Part I) on broiler chickens, each experimental ration contained 10% of a variant rapeseed meal. The thyroid glands of the broiler chickens (allotted to 8 groups according to their diets) were examined for mass gain and submitted to various histopathological, biochemical and morphometric procedures. The variants of rapeseed meal applied to the animals in the groups IV, III and I have been found to be toxic. In contrast, the effects of the other variants of rapeseed meal on the morphology of the thyroid gland have been negligible.

[Improvement in the quality of rape seed by combining silage with fodder sugar beets. 1. Quality evaluation of the silages].

Industrial-scale studies showed that the addition of rape-seed flakes to half sugar mangels improves the feeding value and the quality of the silages. Furthermore, it was found that the development of yeasts was inhibited and that the propagation of acidifiers was retarded as the proportion of rape-seed increased. The microbiological analysis indicates that the amount of rape-seed added to the half sugar mangels should not exceed 10%.

Animal Feed

[Improvement in the quality of rape seed by combining silage with fodder sugar beets. 2. Changes in glucosinolate derivatives and fat contents].

Industrial and laboratory-scale studies showed that the combined silage fermentation of rape-seed flakes with half sugar mangels leds to a very beneficial reduction in the content of glucosinolate derivatives, especially during the first week of fermentation and storage processes on the qualitative and quantitative fatty-acid parameters were but significant.

[Interferon--properties and action].

The role played by interferon in human organism is described, with particular reference to its immunomodulatory effects. The classification of interferons, and the mode of its synthesis in cells infected by viruses are presented. The molecular bases of interferon action as a protein inhibiting virus development and the role of gamma interferon in human immunity are discussed.
