Proximal portions of the anterior cerebral arteries in rats with long-term hypertension were electron microscopically studied. The abnormal substances such as granules, vesicles, vacuoles and other membranous structures, relatively homogeneous masses, and basement membrane-like substances were observed around the medial smooth muscle cells. Basement membrane-like substances were increased with advancing age and the majority of these substances are thought to be turned from the granulo-vesicles. Abnormal substances deposited in the media are thought to be "hyalino-fibrous materials". The majority of our materials had a clear-cut border between the media and the adventitia. The subendothelial spaces were slightly distended with fibrillar and/or finely granular substances with age, but neither cellular element nor fibrinoid substance was found in them.
Weibel-Palade bodies were found in the endothelial cells of the mesenteric arteries of hypertensive rats. They were spherical or rod-shaped and bounded by a single membrane. They measured approximately 0.1 to 0.2 mu in diameter and up to 0.4 mu in length. The majority of them showed microtubular subunits, measuring about 200 A in width. These bodies are thought to originate from Golgi apparatus.
Endothelia of the anterior cerebral arteries in rats aged 1 to 3 days were studied. Thin (about 50-90 A) and thick (about 100-110 A) filaments are present in the endothelia. Numerous spherical- or rod-shaped bodies, measuring approximately 0.07 to 0.3 micrometer in diameter and up to 0.6 micrometer in length occur in the endothelial cells. These bodies contain a tubular structure. The diameter of the individual tubules is about 200 A. The present observations suggest that spherical- or rod-shaped inclusions are first synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and thereafter these materials are transported into the Golgi complex for maturation. A small number of the inclusions, however, may originate directly from the rough endoplasmic reticulum and not pass through the Golgi apparatus.

Nutritional disturbance and blockage of drainage of the vascular wall which were considered to play an impoetant role in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis were experimentally produced by aortic sheathing previously (Huth et al., 1974). Alteration of the rabbit aorta following feeding of cholesterol diet in combination with sheathing of aortic segments by polyethylen tubes is reported in this paper. The results were as follows: 1. When rabbtis were fed a cholesterol diet, atherosclerotic lesions formed in the intima of the aorta. 2. When rabbits were fed a cholesterol diet with simultaneous aortic sheathing, aortic atherosclerosis was also produced within the sheathed segments. 3. When rabbits were fed a cholesterol diet after formation of intimal thickenings within the sheathed segments, lipid deposition was scarce within these segments. The results suggest that among the pathogenetic factors of atherosclerosis a disturbance of vascular nutrition and a blockage of vascular drainage may be of greater importance than hypercholesterolemia.
