Antibodies to adult T-cell leukemia associated antigen (ATLA) in the sera from 14 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) were examined by the indirect immunofluorescence method. All patients were born in the ATL-endemic area, Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, of Japan. Seven of the 13 evaluable patients (54%) gave positive reactions in the anti-ATLA test. Most of the positive patients were over 40 years of age and the positive rate in males was higher than that in females. The most interesting finding in the anti-ATLA positive patients was the presence of circulating abnormal lymphocytes which are usually found in ATL patients. Histological subclassification of the positive patients had no tendency to converge into a particular subclass of HD. Although there was no definite evidence to show an etiological relationship between ATL virus and HD, several findings in this study seem to suggest that in anti-ATLA positive patients, especially in the ATL-endemic area, the anti-ATLA positive state might have some inevitable influence on the natural history of their HD.

To clarify the neural and humoral factors which control gastric receptive relaxation, the effects of various types of vagotomy or splanchnicotomy on receptive relaxation of the canine innervated corpus pouch were investigated. The influence of gastrin, histamine H1-receptor antagonist, and anti-histamine releasing agents on receptive relaxation were also examined. Selective proximal vagotomy or splanchnicotomy resulted in a slight disturbance in receptive relaxation. Truncal vagotomy produced a marked disturbance in receptive relaxation. Administration of tetragastrin potently inhibited receptive relaxation, however, recovery occurred by injecting a histamine H1-receptor antagonist. Increased serum gastrin induced by perfusion of the antrum with liver extract solution disturbed receptive relaxation and this response was inhibited by pretreatment with transamine, an inhibitor of histamine release from histamine secreting cells. These results indicate that receptive relaxation in the canine stomach is controlled not only by vagal and splanchnic nerves, but also by gastrin and histamine.
A patient with an abdominal tumor and gastric cancer was treated with intraperitoneal OK-432 alone. Her general condition improved and the abdominal mass diminished significantly. The fluoroscopic radiography and gastroduodenal fiberscopic examinations revealed a slight improvement. Four months after the initiation of OK-432 therapy, microscopic examination of the biopsy specimen disclosed degenerated tumor cells with a pronounced accumulation of lymphocytes and large monocytes which were ascertained to be macrophages by the fluorescent antibody technique using anti-macrophage serum. This study revealed one possible mechanism of the antitumor action of OK-432.
