Miniature ionization chamber detector developed for X-ray microprobe measurements.

A windowless small ionization chamber detector has been developed for monitoring the intensity of the microbeam at the ID18F microprobe end-station of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The small dimensions of the ionization chamber (10 mm along the beam direction and 5 mm perpendicular to it) make it possible to place it very close to the sample. A pinhole of diameter 50 microm was used for defining the entrance window of the ionization chamber; thus the small counter can be used as an order-selecting aperture while measuring simultaneously the intensity after the aperture. In the present work the technical characteristics, such as the current-voltage curve, stability and linearity, of the small monitor have been tested.

Visualizing photochemical dynamics in solution through picosecond x-ray scattering.

A photoexcited state of molecular iodine in solution is observed using diffuse x-ray scattering at a synchrotron source. The measured changes in the diffuse scattering profile were consistent with earlier models of iodine's photodissociation and geminate recombination reaction, for which the recombined A/A(') state has a 0.4 A greater interatomic spacing than the resting state and has a lifetime of 500 ps in CH2Cl2. This technique should find application in the study of increasingly complicated photochemical systems which undergo structural rearrangements following rapid photolysis.

Effects of adrenergic stimulating and blocking agents on the eccrine sweat secretion in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Quantitative measurements of eccrine sweat secretion following stimulation with adrenaline and terbutaline sulphate, a beta-stimulator, have been performed in patients with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis by means of the electrolytic water analyzer, "Meeco". Seasonal variations were demonstrated, the values being lower in the late autumn. The response to adrenaline could be blocked by phentolamine, an alpha-inhibitor, while propranolol, a beta inhibitor, had no effect.--The response to terbutaline was blocked by atropine and partly by practolol, a beta-inhibitor. Terbutaline induced a larger sweat response than isoprenaline, another beta-stimulator. A beta-receptor mechanism, in some way related to cholinergic receptors, is suggested.

Immunofluorescence studies in herpes gestationis.

In 4 cases of H.G., direct junctional immunofluorescence findings showed an intense band of C3 present in the involved skin of the patients even after the active lesions had disappeard (i.e. 2 months later). Weak specific fluorescence for IgG and in one case also for IgA and IgM was seen in the involved skin. A less intense junctional band of C3 was also present in the uninvolved skin. Antibodies against basal membrane have not been detected in the sera of the patients.
