Total anomalous pulmonary venous return with the circular pulmonary venous connection: outcome of common pulmonary venous agenesis.

A rare case of total anomalous pulmonary venous return, in which the right and left peripheral pulmonary veins connected circularly and there was no central part of the pulmonary vein or the common pulmonary vein, is presented. To our knowledge, total anomalous pulmonary venous return with circular pulmonary venous connection has not been reported previously in the literature. It is thought that the complex connection between peripheral pulmonary veins with the absence of the central part of the pulmonary vein as well as the common pulmonary vein results from common pulmonary venous agenesis.

Delayed thoracic closure after cardiac surgery in infants.

We report 4 cases of delayed thoracic closure after cardiac surgery in infants: 3 cases with transposition of the great arteries and one with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Sternal and skin closure in the primary operation sometimes causes haemodynamic cardiac compression. Postoperative correction of haemodynamic and haemostatic functions are allowed by delayed sternal and skin closure. No complications were encountered.

Diagnostic usefulness of MR imaging for pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma.

Pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma (HC) is an uncommon tumor of the liver. We present the case of a 56-year-old man with pedunculated HC arising from the lower surface of the liver. We recommend sagittal magnetic resonance imaging, which offers a superior choice of scanning planes, in the diagnosis of pedunculated HC.

Mutagenicity and DNA-damaging activity of decomposed products of food colours under UV irradiation.

Five synthetic food colours Food Red Nos 3, 40 and 102 and Food Blue Nos 1 and 2, and their UV irradiated products were tested for mutagenic activity by means of the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. Food colours were irradiated with UV light for 14 days. Food Red Nos 3, 40 and 102 and Food Blue No. 1 were non-mutagenic before and after irradiation. UV irradiated products of Food Blue No. 2 were mutagenic in TA98 with or without S-9 mix. The mutagenic activity increased with increasing irradiation period, reached maximum potency on day 6, and then decreased. Moreover, Food Blue No. 2 showed DNA-damaging activity after 14 days of irradiation in rec-assay using Bacillus subtilis strains H17 and M45. The capillary electrophoresis was applied for the analysis of UV irradiated products of Food Blue No. 2. The original peak of Food Blue No. 2 was decomposed into seven peaks after UV irradiation.
