An epidemiological study was performed on leishmaniasis in a newly established community in south-eastern Paraguay. 149 persons, of 172 inhabitants, were thoroughly examined by clinical, parasitological and immunological (leishmanin skin test) examinations. 88 of those examined (59%) were clinically positive for dermal and nasal (mucosal) lesions or dermal scars, while 74 (50%) were positive by the leishmanin test. Of the 88 persons, 66 (75%) were positive for both leishmanial (dermal and nasal) signs and skin test; these subjects were therefore considered to be leishmaniasis patients. Most of the patients (60%) had a single dermal lesion. Among the 66 leishmaniasis patients, serious mucosal (nasal septum) lesions were observed in the 41 subjects: 2 had destruction of the septum, 8 had ulceration and 31 had erythema. In this community the persons with dermal and/or nasal problems had been treated with meglumine antimonate (Glucantime), without any precise diagnosis having been made by parasitological or immunological examination. The socio-economical and socio-medical points of view aspects are discussed.
Two children, a sister and a younger brother, were measured with regard to stature, head and neck height, iliospinal height, and trunk length, every morning and evening for one year. They were 7.5 years old and 6.6 years old, respectively, on the first day of the investigation. In both children, stature and trunk length, but not the other dimensions, were longer in the morning and shorter in the evening. Almost all the year's statural elongation was due to lower limb elongation, but there was a sharp upward turn in April-May which resulted from an increase in trunk length. The head and neck height curves were flat throughout the year.
The serial data from two siblings, aged 6.6 and 7.5 years of age at the initiation of the study, measured each evening for total standing height during 365 days, are analysed by two methods to investigate the nature of the underlying growth pattern. The saltation and stasis model, designed to identify the presence of statistically significant pulses in sequential data, is compared for goodness-of-fit to first to sixth degree polynomial functions, used to investigate the presence of a slowly varying smooth continuous function in the data, and high order polynomials of the same degree of flexibility as the individual's saltation and stasis results. The saltation and stasis model is found to better-fit the experimental data than the slowly varying smooth continuous functions (p < 0.01 to 0.001). The timing characteristics of the saltation and stasis patterns are investigated and the temporal patterns are suggestive of a non-random, aperiodical deterministic system.

The following studies were performed to develop a new technique of hyperthermia by vascular catheterization for the treatment of malignant neoplasm. A balloon catheter was inserted into the artery of a cancer-affected organ and inflation of the balloon temporarily occluded the artery, after which an anticancer drug solution warmed to 45 degrees C was infused. The purpose of this technique was to enable the solution to arrive at the affected area undiluted by blood. It would then remain in the organ and act on the lesion. When OK-432 was intravenously administered to induce pyrexia of 40 degrees C, followed by the above-mentioned arterial infusion, it was expected that the effects of hyperthermia and chemotherapy would be synergistic. In cases of liver cancer and urinary bladder cancer subjected to the arterial infusion of warmed anticancer drugs, however, the temperature in the hepatic vein increased by only 0.5 degree C while that in urethra near the tumor increased by only 1 degree C. In the future, further improvement needs to be made to obtain effective local heating with this technique.
