Yolk sac tumor of the bladder.

A 1-year-old white boy presented with hematuria and was found to have a large polypoid bladder mass. Light and electron microscopic, and immunohistochemical diagnosis was a yolk sac (endodermal sinus) tumor. This is the first case of a primary yolk sac tumor of the bladder to be described in the English literature.

Hemodynamic effects of potentially useful antineoplastic agents.

Adenosine (Ado) and Ado analogues produce multiple hemodynamic effects including coronary vasodilation, bradycardia, alterations in left ventricular contractility, and peripheral vasodilation or vasoconstriction depending on the vascular bed. The intact anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rat was examined in relation to electrocardiogram and blood pressure alterations induced by a series of potentially useful antineoplastic agents that are purine or pyrimidine analogues as part of a preclinical evaluation of these agents. The drugs tested were arabinosyladenine and its 5'-monophosphate derivative arabinosyladenine-5'-monophosphate (ara-AMP), the 2-fluoro derivative of ara-AMP, the pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidines (formycin and formycin B), 8-azaadenosine, 6-methylmercaptopurine riboside, tricyclic nucleoside-5'-monophosphate, 5-fluorouracil, arabinosylcytosine, and 3-deazauridine. Those Ado analogues subject to deamination by adenosine deaminase (ADA) were also studied in the intact Sprague-Dawley rat after pretreatment with the ADA inhibitor 2'-deoxycoformycin. The results indicate that these agents have significant hemodynamic effects and should alert clinicians to potential adverse reactions when infusing these drugs.

Response characteristics and stratification of tectal neurons in the toad Bufo bufo (L.).

In the optic tectum of Bufo bufo the activity of single neurons was recorded during the presentation of moving visual stimuli. The location of the recorded cells was marked iontophoretically by means of alcian blue dye. A total of 132 cells were studied, most of which showed clear differences within their responses to a square and to rectangles oriented either horizontally or vertically. The cells were found primarily within the tectum layers 8 and 6. The majority of them preferred the square to the horizontal bar, and this stimulus to the vertical one. Another group responded best to the horizontal rectangle. Relatively few cells were found in which the vertical stimulus was preferred to the horizontal one. A considerable number of tectal cells showed a change of stimulus preference if the stimulus velocity was changed. No clear correlation between response types and anatomical distribution within the tectum layers could be found.

The effect of two pesticides, Miedzian 50 and Gesagard 50, on the development of tadpoles of Rana temporaria.

Tadpoles of the frog, Rana temporaria, in two developmental stages were subjected to the action of aqueous suspensions of two pesticides--Miedzian 50 and Gesagard 50. The changes caused by these substances pertain chiefly to the alimentary canal, brain, and muscles, and are connected with the developmental stage of the animals. Miedzian 50 caused a partial sytolysis in the cells of the intestinal epithelium and the parenchyma of the liver. Gesagard 50 was more toxic; under its action strong degenerative changes were obtained in the alimentary canal and the brain. Also, disorders in the development of tadpoles were observed. These consisted in a partial inhibition of growth and a retardation of the process of completion of the operculum as compared with control animals.

Preliminary observations on the effects on the organs of mice of administering some carbamate pesticides.

Two pesticides, Karbatox 75 and Unden, were used for the investigation, in daily doses of 20 mg per kg body weight, injected intraperitoneally during a period of 20 days. A comparatively low toxicity of these compounds for mice was ascertained. Among morphological changes were found: hypertrophy of the intestinal epithelium, a decrease in size of liver cells and a significant increase in number of Gomori-positive glia cells, as well as an increase in the volume of cell nuclei in the neurosecretory neurocytes of hypothalamus.
