The distribution of late-replicating segments along the chromosomes of five clones of W. virgo is described. Some, but not all of these segments correspond to C-bands. In general, the "autoradiographic profiles" (histograms of linear grain density along the length of chromosomes labeled with tritiated thymidine in late S-phase) show strong resemblances throughout the five clones. However, some significant differences exist, and these are particularly marked in the case of the Boulder clone, which is anomalous in many other respects. --A similar study has also been carried out on the two bisexual species of Warramaba ("P169" and "P196") that gave rise, by hybridization more than half a million years ago, to the parthenogenetic W. virgo. In the case of P169, the autoradiographic profiles of the three large chromosomes (X + A, B + 5, CD) which it has contributed to the W. virgo karyotype are extremely similar to those of the corresponding chromosomes in the virgo clones we have studied. In the case of P196 there is likewise, in most instances, a close resemblance of the autoradiographic profiles of the AB, X1 and CD chromosomes to those of the same chromosomes in the virgo clones, but that of the X1 shows no particular resemblance to the anomalous profile of the X1 in the Boulder clone, in which the X1 has undergone a structural reorganisation. The autoradiographic profile of the P196 CD chromosome does, however, show a much closer resemblance to that of the corresponding chromosome in the Boulder clone than to those of the CD196 in the other four virgo clones studied. These investigations confirm the considerable evolutionary stability of DNA replication patterns.

We report the anatomic variations found in four additional cases of trisomy 13. Data from these and four previous cases [Colacino and Pettersen, 1978] are utilized to define a muscle phenotype. Previously unreported defects include the bilateral presence of cervical ribs and the bilateral absence of 12th thoracic ribs in five of the eight cases. One unusual developmental defect of the great vessels is also described. The findings suggest that a definitive diagnosis of trisomy 13 can be made on the basis of six muscle variations.

Two mechanisms are felt to be responsible for the production of anemia in patients with chronic diseases. The first is failure to produce adequate amounts of erythropoietin (EP), and the second is failure to deliver iron to the bone marrow in amounts sufficient to support normal erythropoiesis. In order to evaluate these hypotheses we studied urine and serum EP levels and levels of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate in normal subjects, in patients with the anemia of chronic diseases, in patients with chronic liver disease, and in patients with a variety of other anemias. Based on the results, we propose first that insufficient production of EP is one of the major mechanisms responsible for anemia in patients with chronic diseases. Second, insufficient production of EP is, in part, responsible for anemia seen in patients with chronic liver disease. Third, serum and urine EP levels decrease with aging, and this correlates with the fall of hemoglobin levels seen in older normal subjects.

Studied the relationship between state-trait anxiety and mood states in deliquents by giving the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC) (Spielberger, 1973) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971) to 41 behavior problem adolescents who were residents of a facility for youthful offenders. Results indicated that males and females did not differ significantly. The A-State portion of the STAIC was correlated significantly with the Vigor-Activity and Anger-Hostility portions of the POMS as well as the Total Mood Disturbance index. On the other hand, the A-Trait portion of the STAIC was correlated significantly with the Depression-Dejection, the Tension-Anxiety, and the Fatigue-Inertia portions of the POMS as well as the Total Mood Disturbance index. Findings were discussed in terms of their relationship to previous research and in terms of the differences in conception of affective states presented by Spielberger (1973) and McNair et al. (1971).

An Australian mantid, Ima fusca, with 2n male equals 34, shows achiasmatic meiosis in the male, as in other Australian members of the subfamily Iridopteryginae. It is, however, unique among approximately 104 mantid species that have been studied cytologically, in having an XY sex chromosome mechanism. The X and Y chromosomes are not associated as a bivalent in first metaphase, but arrange themselves opposite one another on the spindle and regularly pass to different poles at first anaphase.
