Analysis of observers' responses to the Rogers, Perls, and Ellis films.

Transcripts of filmed interviews by Rogers, Ellis, and Perls were classified as to verbal response categories proposed by Goodman and Dooley. Later the films were shown to 80 college undergraduates who filled out semantic differential scales at various points during the films. The three filmed therapists were rated significantly differently on the semantic differential categories of competence, benevolence, client's feelings, and therapeutic atmosphere. Each filmed therapist used significantly different patterns of verbal interaction. Stepwise regressions were calculated to determine the categories of verbal response which would account for the ratings of the undergraduate observers.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis is a rare disease which may be confused with other, more common thyroid disorders. Gram-positive organisms such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Pneumococcus are most frequently responsible for this condition. Appropriate antibiotics should be selected to control local and systemic signs of infection. Incision and drainage of fluctuant areas are indicated. Thyroid function almost always returns to normal with eradication of infection.

Patency evaluation of a LeVeen shunt using 99mTc-sulfur colloid.

The LeVeen shunt has proved valuable in relieving intractable ascites. It is however subject to failure in about 5--8% of cases. To our knowledge there are only three reports in the literature describing the use of nuclides to assess patency; two using 99mTc-sulfur colloid and one using 99mTc-albumin. The purpose of this paper is to add our experience to the data currently published and stress that late liver visualization may occur with an obstructed shunt.

Mycotic carotid artery aneurysm.

A painful, pulsatile neck mass with associated fever should suggest the presence of a mycotic carotid artery aneurysm. Diagnosis can be confirmed from angiograms. Broad spectrum antibiotics are indicated, and an operation should be performed promptly. The lack of tissue planes uninvolved by infection will almost always prevent vascular reconstruction. Carotid artery ligation with excision of the aneurysms is recommended.

Nutritional assessment of the head and neck cancer patient.

Malnutrition is a common problem in patients with head and neck cancer. Its presence may lead to an increase in morbidity and mortality following an operation, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. A standard nutritional assessment will define the nature and degree of the nutritional deficiency while periodic reassessment will document the effects of nutritional support.
