Benign aqueduct stenosis in adults.

A series of 55 cases is described in which hydrocephalus associated with non-neoplastic narrowing of the Sylvian aqueduct produced symptoms for the first time in adult life. The clinical features of the patients and their investigation are described and discussed.

Amine metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with disseminated sclerosis.

Mean homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid concentrations were significantly low in the lumbar CSF of a group of patients with disseminated sclerosis (DS) who were severely disabled but not in the CSF of a less severely restricted group with DS. CSF concentrations were also low in a group of patients with superior cerebellar peduncular tremor due to DS and in a single patient with a similar tremor associated with a post-traumatic brain-stem lesion. The interpretation of abnormal CSF amine metabolite concentrations is discussed in the light of these findings.

Outcome of investigation of patients with presenile dementia.

Of 106 patients admitted for investigation to a neurological hospital with a presumptive diagnosis of dementia, 84 were confirmed to have intellectual impairment or loss of learning and memory function or both. A possible aetiology for the dementia was found in 36 of these 84 patients; the commonest causes discovered were intracranial mass lesions, arterial disease, and alcoholism. Fifteen of the 106 patients were found not to be demented but to have some other illness, most commonly depression. Of the whole series some 15% of the patients suffered from conditions that were amenable to treatment.

Diabetic amyotrophy: a follow-up study.

A clinical follow-up study of 12 patients with diabetic amyotrophy is reported. Re-examination after an interval indicated that improvement had occurred in all but one instance, and had been maintained over an average follow-up period of four and a half years. Improvement in the neurological syndrome appeared to follow improvement in diabetic control or institution of treatment in those whose diabetes had not previously been diagnosed.Seven patients made a good functional recovery, three no longer having any muscular weakness. Five showed significant residual disability.

Method for measuring mineralization in lake sediments.

A method is described for measuring the mineralization of an organic solute ((14)C-glucose) by the heterotrophic indigenous bacteria in lake sediments. Since there is no suitable procedure for the determination of in situ microbial activities in sediments, the procedure described is probably the best devised so far and may serve as a base for a more definitive procedure.
