Two small facial neurinomas located in the horizontal portion were presented to demonstrate the clinical features, diagnostic evaluation, and surgical treatment. These two cases show the early state of facial neurinoma and suggest the mechanism of facial paralysis by facial neurinoma. Facial nerve decompression is recommended for Bell's palsy unresponsive to the conservative therapy and recurrent facial palsy.

The aim of this work was to prepare specific antibodies to various types of collagen in order to study on immunohistological localization of collagen under normal and pathologic conditions. Human type I and III collagens were extracted from human dura mater and placenta using limited pepsin digestion followed by differential salt precipitation and chromatographic purification. The purity of collagens was assessed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Antibodies to type I and III were prepared in rabbits, and showed a high reaction with the corresponding human collagens, and these antibodies were tested to determine activity using ELISA. However, antibody to type I also showed some cross-reaction with type III, and antibody to type III, with type I. Using these antibodies, tissue distribution of collagen was examined in the middle ear by peroxidase anti-peroxidase method. In granulation tissue, it was revealed that types I and III co-existed.

We described our experiences in the use of micro-sliced septal cartilage homografts in tympanoplasty. The cartilage plates (0.1-0.5 mm thick) previously prepared with our method by use of a dermatome were used for the three purposes 1) to reconstruct the attic wall defect, 2) to prevent the retraction of the grafted fascia in myringoplasty, and 3) to prevent the displacement of the columella and the retraction of the grafted fascia in columella-type tympanoplasty. There have been no postoperative infections or extrusions in our 142 cases. These cartilage plates are considered to be very convenient in tympanoplasty.

Collagenase activity of cholesteatoma epithelium, temporal bone and ear canal skin was investigated. The enzyme extracted from these tissues was proved to be collagenase by disc electrophoresis. Collagenase activity was measured directly in homogenates of tissues. Activity was greatest in the skin. The activity in cholesteatomas was either higher than that of the bone, or the activity was higher in bone than in the cholesteatoma. These findings suggest that some variation of collagenase activity may be due to the stage of cholesteatoma, active or inactive in collagen metabolism of bone destruction, and that the ear canal skin plays a great role in bone destruction, this supporting the immigration theory.

Biological and serological analyses of 272 isolates of Vibrio cholerae O1 from six epidemics and from a few sporadic cases in Kenya were carried out. All of the isolates were identified as V. cholerae biotype E1 Tor, and 210 out of 272 isolates were hemolytic as examined by Feeley's method.

A method is described for the microdetermination of berberine chloride in human urine by a field desorption mass spectrometry selected ion monitoring system using a deuterium labelled analogue of berberine chloride as an internal standard. Prior to the quantitation of berberine in human urine, the fundamental problems related to field desorption selected ion monitoring, such as quality of emitters, amounts of sample loading, and the programming rate of the emitter current, were statistically investigated in detail. Berberine chloride can be determined in a concentration of 10 ng ml-1 in human urine by the method described. The analytical results were compared with those from gas chromatography mass spectrometry selected ion monitoring in the chemical ionization mode suggesting that the reliability of field desorption selected ion monitoring may be almost equivalent to that of gas chromatography chemical ionization selected ion monitoring.
