Specific protection against bovine leukemia virus infection conferred on cattle by the Romanian inactivated vaccine BL-VACC-RO.

The Romanian BL-VACC-RO vaccine against bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection was prepared with ethylenimine-inactivated BLV obtained from persistently infected cell lines. Intramuscular administration of two vaccine doses (each containing 0.40 mg virus glycoprotein with adjuvant), 2 weeks apart, conferred protection against challenge infection with BLV on 18 of the 20 vaccinated calves. Two calves were not protected, in spite of their positive serologic response to vaccination. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the BL-VACC-RO vaccine in preventing BLV infection.

In vitro and in vivo investigations on reticuloendotheliosis virus infection.

Experimental transmission of reticuloendotheliosis (RE) in 1-day-old SPF chickens was achieved by intraperitoneal inoculation of cell-associated and cell-free RE virus (REV). REV-inoculated chickens exhibited an immune response throughout the entire observation period. Viremia persisted for 5--6 months in chickens hatched from REV-inoculated SPF embryonated eggs. The natural occurrence of RE was detected in turkey flocks of farms Bc.

[Hydatid cyst of the pancreas].

The pancreatic localization of hydatidosis is exceedingly rare (between 0,5 and 3%). A double localization, in the lung and in the pancreas was encountered only by J. Caroli and by authors of the present paper. As a rule the diagnosis is made during the biliopancreatic complications by surgical exploration. The evolution of a patient aged 55 is discussed, who presented with an icterocholangitic syndrome suggesting neoplastic disease, with an image of hidatic cyst in the upper third level of the right lung. The diagnosis of pancreatic hydatic cyst was made by puncture, during surgery, and retrogastric cystogastrectomia according to Jedlicka was followed by irreversible acute hepatorenal failure.

Laboratory data on the experimental transmission of Creutzfeldt--Jakob disease in the guinea pig.

Cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from 3 patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were inoculated intracerebrally to guinea pigs. After an incubation period of 4-14 months the animals developed a serially transmissible disease, characterized by loss of appetite, loss of weight, difficulty in movement, myoclonic convulsions and a fatal outcome within several days. The microscopic lesions caused by the experimental disease consisted in glial proliferation, spongiform change and vacuolation of the cytoplasm of proximal dendritic regions.

[Evolutive peculiarities of streptococcal infections in the year 1980, in the city of Bucharest].

In further investigations on the evolutive trends of the epidemiologic streptococcal process, an extensive epidemiological survey was carried out in prescholar and school communities in the town of Bucharest with a view to applying efficient antiepidemic measures able to limit primary streptococcal infections and prevent late, redoubtable complications. In 1980, in Bucharest, morbidity from scarlet fever was at its lowest level (92.7 per 100,000) during the last 31 years; it was in general benign, affecting especially in the month of March the 5-9 years age group (623.9 per 100,000) and the 1-4 years age group (529.4 per 100,000). The trailing evolution of a scarlet fever focus in a prescholar community suggested the hypothesis of the potentiation of the induction of streptococcal toxigenesis under the influence of intercurrent vital infections, especially measles. There were no deaths from scarlet fever. Laboratory investigations for the active detection and treatment of anginas, of carriers at risk, totalled 52101 tests; of these 4478 (8.59%) were positive for group "A" streptococci. In the prescholar communities surveyed no poststreptococcal complications were reported (acute articular rheumatism and glomerulonephritis). In 1980, there were 63 cases of acute articular rheumatism (code 250) in the 0-18 year-old group. The results suggest the need of continued epidemiological survey of streptococcal infections in children with a view to improving the health status of the population.
