Pigments extracted from three strains of yellow enterococci showed the spectral and solvent partition characteristics of carotenoids. An unusual C(32) carotenoid aldehyde appears to predominate.

Inositol and choline were present in varying amounts among the species of Rhodophyta, Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta, and Euglenophyta examined. However, in the two members of the order Fucales (division Phaeophyta) examined, no detectable amounts of choline were found. In contrast, the species of Cyanophyta examined contained no detectable amounts of either choline or inositol. All species of the fungal classes Phycomyceteae, Ascomyceteae, and Basidiomyceteae collected contained both inositol and choline in varying amounts. The red, brown, and blue-green algae usually contained much less inositol and choline than do plant and animals sources, but the fungi and the algae Chlorella and Euglena contained amounts comparable to those present in plant sources.

The cell wall constituents of Leuconostoc citrovorum 8082, L. mesenteroides 10830a, and L. mesenteroides 11449 have been ascertained. All three strains contained glycerol. Glucose and rhamnose were the major reducing sugar constituents. Alanine, glutamic acid, lysine, glucosamine, and muramic acid were the principal amino acids and amino sugars in all three strains. In addition, strain 10830a contained l-serine as a major cell wall component. Quantitative amino acid analyses indicate that glutamic acid, lysine, glucosamine, muramic acid, and serine may be present in the cell walls in equimolar amounts and that alanine is present in three to four times these quantities. The similarities and differences between the cell wall constituents of the leuconostocs and those of the lactobacilli and streptococci are discussed.

Ikawa, Miyoshi (University of New Hampshire, Durham), James W. Morrow, and Sheila J. Harney. Paper chromatographic system for the identification of glycerol in bacterial cell walls. J. Bacteriol. 92:812-814. 1966.-The solvent system consisting of isopropanol-5% boric acid (7:1, v/v) separates glycerol from the other carbohydrate constituents which are found in hydrolysates of bacterial cell walls. This system is useful for the identification of glycerol even when anhydroribitol and rhamnose are both present, and has been found to be applicable on cell wall hydrolysates as well as on synthetic mixtures.
Usual human livers contain two major ALDH isozymes, i.e., cytosolic ALDH1 and mitochondrial ALDH2, while approximately 50% of Orientals are "atypical" and have only the ALDH1 and are missing the ALDH2. Instead, the atypical livers contain an enzymatically inactive but immunologically cross-reactive material (CRM) corresponding to the ALDH2 component. Some Orientals are found to be atypical also in the ALDH1 locus, i.e., they are missing the enzymatically active ALDH1 but contain a large amount of CRM corresponding to the ALDH1 component. cDNA for ALDH1 and that for ALDH2 were cloned and their nucleotide sequences were determined. The amino acid sequences of ALDH1 and ALDH2 were deduced from their cDNA sequences. The molecular abnormality of the inactive ALDH2(2) is found to be the substitution of Glu at the 14th position from the COOH-terminal of the protein by Lys which resulted from G----A transition in the gene.
