Root canal treatment as a treatment modality for temporary tooth retention in adolescent patients.

In certain cases root canal treatment may be an adequate intermediate therapy, mainly for severely traumatized teeth in adolescent patients that probably cannot be retained permanently. The treatment aims at temporary retention of otherwise hopeless teeth until definite treatment, for example insertion of bridges or dental implants, may be performed. This kind of treatment can help to avoid the application of removable prostheses in young patients. This treatment modality requires intensive information to be presented to the patients and their parents on the benefits and risks of the treatment procedures, endodontic treatment under aseptic conditions respecting the general guidelines for root canal treatment, and a strict recall regimen to avoid occurrence or increase of pathological conditions. Four cases (five teeth) of temporary tooth retention by endodontic treatment are presented.

[Digital image processing in endodontics].

Digital image processing methods were applied to improve the analysis of endodontic follow-up radiographs. After the individual radiographs had been digitized with a videocamera, different standard image processing procedures, such as histogram-equilisation, histogram-matching and noise reduction were performed. In some cases the use of those techniques facilitated the comparison of radiographs taken at long intervals under nonstandardized conditions. As a result, diagnosis of the development of periapical lesions or hard tissue formation in teeth with incomplete root formation was improved.

Use of an electronic apex locator in the treatment of teeth with incomplete root formation.

An electronic apex locator was used to determine length and control apical bridge formation in the treatment of teeth with incomplete root formation. Measurements were taken in 10 teeth in which apexification therapy had just started and in 11 teeth where the formation of the apical barrier was considered to be complete. In the beginning of the apexification therapy, when the apical foramen was still open, endometric measurements gave incorrect results in all instances. After apical closure had occurred and definite obturation of the root canal seemed possible, the apex locator in all teeth gave correct results and complete agreement was obtained between the radiographs and the electronic tests. Even in teeth in which complete apical closure could not be obtained, the results of electronic measurements were correct. Electronic apex locators may be used as auxilliary devices in controlling apical hard tissue closure in the treatment of teeth with incomplete root formation.
