Prognostic factors in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

In respect to literary data, we tried to evaluate some qualitative and quantitative indices for prognosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). In the group of 117 patients we evaluated prognostic parameter proposed by Jaksic and Vitale, which takes into consideration so-called total tumour mass (TTM). In the group of patients investigated we did not succeed in confirmation of prognostic value of TTM scoring as determined at the time of CLL diagnosis. However, investigation of doubling time of total tumour mass (DT TTM) appeared to be more important. To determine reliable prognostic criteria for CLL, however, complex cooperative study on the greater group of patients is necessary.

Drug resistance induction and cross-resistance studies with Pt-complexes.

In vitro drug resistance was induced against cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cis-DDP), 1,2-diaminocyclohexaneplatinum-(II)citrate (PEX) and 1,2-diaminocyclohexaneplatinum(II)glucarate (PTU) in L1210 leukemia cell line. Using the resistant sublines cross-resistance was found between cis-DDP and cis-diamminecyclobutane-1,1-dicarboxylatoplatinum(II) (CBDCA) and between the three 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DACH) derivatives tested. No (or low degree) cross-resistance was found between cis-DDP and DACH derivatives.

Some immunological peculiarities in generalized plasmacytoma and their possible clinical interpretation.

According to the immunological classification, plasmacytoma is assigned to the group of secretory immunocytomas. The designation "immunoproliferative hemoblastosis" implies certain peculiarities of immunological reactivity in its malignant transformation. The study deals with some of the more recent concepts on the immunochemical properties and morphological differentiation of plasmatic or plasmacytoma cells. Mention is also made of the results of some tests for evaluation of the function of T and B lymphocytes in patients suffering from a generalized plasmacytoma, during the course of chemotherapy.

[Actual problems of the H blood group immunogenetics (author's transl)].

The quantity of H blood group antigen produced by the H gene product, 2-alpha-fucosyltransferase, has a key importance in the A, B and Leb antigen formation. The H blood group deficiency results always in a more or less expressed insufficiency fo the A, B and Leb antigen production. More thorough investigations of the "Bombay" and "Para-Bombay" blood groups have shown, that an absolute lack of the H antigen on the red cells of this type probably does not exist at all. The production of H antigen is only in one or both chemical forms more of less suppressed. The formation of the H antigen is under control not only of the structural gene and of its mutants, but also of the action of at least two types of regulator genes, one of them controlling the formation of the glycoprotein, the other one the glycolipid form of the H antigen. Considerations about the probable genetic background of the recessively inherited Oh or OHx, Ah, Bh and OHz, as well as of the dominant Hm phenotypes, are presented. The heterogeneity and individuality of the ABH blood groups of the same specificity is pointed out.

Chimerism 46,XX/46,XY in a phenotypic female.

A female patient is reported with lymphocyte chromosome chimerism (46,XX/46,XY). Her whole-body chimerism was confirmed in the ABO blood group system by the presence of two different erythrocyte populations, A1O and OO. Normal findings were recorded at physical and gynecological examination, except for mammary hypoplasia and sterility of 7 years duration, the latter complaint being the cause for genetic examination of the patient.
