Isolation and characterization of a 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) propionic acid-degrading soil bacterium.

The 2-(2,4-dichlorphenoxy)propionic acid (2,4-DP)-degrading bacterial strain MH was isolated after numerous subcultivations of a mixed culture obtained by soil-column enrichment and finally identified as Flavobacterium sp. Growth of this strain was supported by 2,4-DP (maximum specific growth rate 0.2 h-1) as well as by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butyric acid (2,4-DB), and 2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP) as sole sources of carbon and energy under aerobic conditions. 2,4-DP-Grown cells (10(8] of strain MH degraded 2,4-dichlorophenoxyalkanoic acids, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and 4-chlorophenol at rates in the range of 30 nmol/h. Preliminary investigations indicate that cleavage of 2,4-DP results in 2,4-DCP, which is further mineralized via ortho-hydroxylation and ortho-cleavage of the resulting 3,5-dichlorocatechol.

Autotransplantation of superior cervical ganglion to the caudate nucleus in three patients with Parkinson's disease (preliminary report).

Striatal cervical ganglionic implants have been utilized for the first time for treatment of three patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. Tissue grafts from the superior cervical ganglion have been dissected and immediately transplanted into the head of the caudate nucleus. The grafted tissue placed in a cavity of the caudate nucleus remains in contact with the cerebrospinal fluid in the lateral ventricle. Three and six months after surgery, none of the patients has had any major complications and their lower score of Unified Parkinsonism Rating Scale (UPRS) points was associated with an improvement of the signs of Parkinson's disease. Present data have provided some optimism that grafting of superior cervical ganglion is a feasible approach in Parkinson's disease.

Pictorial essay. Roentgenologic appearance of traumatic diaphragmatic rupture.

The difficulties in recognizing a diaphragmatic rupture are well known and mostly due to a lack of typical clinical findings and an aspecific chest X-ray. This paper gives a brief review of the radiological techniques which can be helpful in the early diagnosis of traumatic rupture of the diaphragm.

Diffusion-weighted MR imaging in the evaluation of renal infection: preliminary results.

Diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has already gained status in the neuroradiological MRI approach of a patient suffering from a variety of neurological diseases. The clinical application of DW MRI in the evaluation of renal disease is not standard. This manuscript describes preliminary results of the application of DW imaging in renal infection to aid differential diagnosis and/or lesion detection in clinical MRI. Three patients with acute pyelonephritis and two patients with renal abscess (one with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, the other with a solitary pyogenic renal abscess) were examined with MRI. Areas of acute pyelonephritis and abscedation have restricted proton diffusion and are demonstrated on the DW images. Refinement of the technique, in-depth investigation of the pathological background of the MR findings and evaluation of its true clinical value need further investigation. This manuscripts shows preliminary findings of DW imaging in patients with renal infectious disease.

MRI in the assessment of pregnancy related intrauterine bleeding: a valuable adjunct to ultrasound?

MR imaging using ultrafast MR sequences is a useful method in assessing pregnancies at risk. This is especially the case for fetal imaging. However, reports of imaging of the placenta or the uterus are rare. We report the MR findings in 8 pregnant patients with vaginal blood loss in whom the obstetrical ultrasound was equivocal. MR imaging was performed with a 1.5 T magnet and consisted of T2- (HASTE), fat-suppressed gradient echo T1- and gradient echo T2-weighted images. Adequate anatomical visualisation of the uterus, the placentary tissue and the intrauterine bleeding irrespective of size and location of the latter, were obtained in all cases.

Early surgery for ruptured cerebral aneurysm.

Preliminary experience with 150 consecutive cases of ruptured cerebral aneurysms operated on within 48 hours is reported. The rationale of this emergency procedure is to prevent early rerupture and also to prevent neurological ischaemic consequences of the subarachnoid haemorrhage likely to develop in the first week after a rupture. The acceptable outcome of the surgically treated cases (87% excellent and good outcome) has been favourably matched to those of a group of equal number of consecutive cases seen in suitable condition for surgery within 48 hours by medical personnel but that remained unoperated for various reasons. The incidence of delayed neurological ischaemia as the definite cause of death is lower in the group operated on in the acute stage than those with delayed surgery, although the overall incidence of clinical vasospasm does not seem significantly lower than in the delayed surgery group.

Immunological studies with aortic and venous tissue antigens. III. Examination of cell-mediated and humoral immune response induced by human vascular antigens.

The effects of human vascular antigens on the cell-mediated and the humoral immune response were studied in guinea pigs. In animals immunized with buffer extracts of aortic and venous wall a well measurable cell-mediated and humoral immune response were developed. Between the two kinds of vascular extracts in the skin tests, migration inhibition tests and antibody-production tests a cross-reactivity was observed, whereas the induction of desoxyribonucleic acid-synthesis proved to be specific. No cellular or humoral immune response to vascular extracts was detectable in the control animals. Analysing the time-kinetics of the cell-mediated and humoral immune response it was found, that with the increased production of antibodies the cellular immune reactions did not cease until the ninth week.

[Oddi's sphincterotomy or sphincteroplasty. Considerations on the results obtained with a personal sphincteroplasty technic].

A total of 21 cases are presented, of patients in whom Oddian sphincteroplasty was performed, according to an original technique. In 19 cases the indication was due to Oddian stenosis associated to lithiasis or hepatic hydatic cysts which had ruptured in the biliary pathways. In two other cases security sphincteroplasty of the Oddi sphincter was performed for lithiasis of the choledocus. The decision was based on macroscopic changes of the biliary pathways, on the control of the main biliary pathway. Sphincteroplasty was achieved with the aid of an original probe, and the incision of the ampullary area was in the average 25 mm in length. The postoperative control, made by tube cholangiography and barium examination, has evidenced the presence of a wide, open choledocoduodenal orifice. Duodenal fistula was one of the complications which followed duodenostomy. This however was fully repaired in 14 days after conservative treatment. After a confrontation of the results achieved with this method, and the data published in the literature the authors support oddian sphincteroplasty, and stress its advantages by comparison with the results provided by sphincterotomy.
