Haematological and biochemical changes in buffalo calves inoculated with Sarcocystis fusiformis from cats.

Two groups of buffalo calves were infected with Sarcocystis fusiformis sporocysts. Animals of the first group received each 5 X 10(5) sporocysts, those of the second group 5 million sporocysts. All calves were clinically normal during 6 weeks after infection. Minor changes were observed in the blood cytology, serum alkaline phosphatase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, total proteins, urea and glucose of infected buffalo calves.

The endogenous stages of Sarcocystis cameli (Mason, 1910).

The endogenous stages of Sarcocystis cameli (Mason, 1910) in the small intestine of dogs are described. These stages are mainly in the posterior third of the small intestine. They were observed only in the lamina propria of the distal third of the villi. There was no schizogonic process. Micro and macrogamonts were differentiated 18 h p.i. The first zygote was observed 24 h later. Unsporulated oocysts were found 30, 36, 42, 48 h and 4 days p.i. The oocysts started sporulation on the 5th day p.i. Completely sporulated oocysts were formed 8 days p.i.

[Measurement of antidiuretic hormone and plasma renin activity in desert rodents].

Plasma antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and renin activity (PRA) were determined in two species of desert rodent (Jaculus orientalis and Jaculus deserti) under chronic dehydration and were compared to those of Wistar Rat. ADH concentration was very high in the desert animals: 200 times higher than in the Rat on a normal diet and 20 times higher than in the 48 hours-dehydrated Rats. The neurohypophyseal ADH content of these rodents was twice that of the normally hydrates Rat, while the dehydration caused a decrease of neurohypophyseal content in the Rat. Plasma renin activity was respectively 2.6 and 3.7 times higher in Jaculus deserti and Jaculus orientalis than in Rats on normal diet, but it was similar to that of dehydrated Rats. During an experimental chronic dehydration, the renin angiotensin system is moderately activated in the desert rodents; but, there is an intensive stimulation of ADH which may play a primordial role in the maintenance of water balance. Now it is necessary to demonstrate how these mechanisms are involved in the natural environment of the animals.

Ultrastructural study of Sarcocystis fusiformis (Railliet, 1897) infecting the Indian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) of Egypt.

Sarcocysts from the muscular layer of the oesophagus of 20 Indian water buffaloes (about 7--10 years old) have been collected in Egypt and studied by means of electron microscopy in Bonn (West Germany). Large and small cysts have been observed. The large type ranged from 7--30 X 3--7 mm, and the small cysts measured 1.3--5.1 X 0.7--2.2 mm. The metrocytes of both types of cysts as well as the merozoites were very similar concerning their shape, size and ultrastructural characteristics. The metrocytes of the large and small cysts were mostly located at the peripheral region of the cysts and multiplied by endodyogeny. They were variable in shape and size. They ranged from 7.6 X 4.8 micrometer to 9.2 X 5.4 micrometer. Most of them exhibited deep invaginations of their pellicle. Their cytoplasm was electron pale and often extremely vacuolated. The merozoites of both types of cysts were elongated with a length ranging from 14.6--17.0 micrometer and showed all characteristic organelles of these cells (conoid, rhoptries, micronemes, subpellicular microtubules etc.) The wall of the large and small cysts showed no distinct morphological differences. The great similarities between the walls of the two types of cysts as well as between the micromorphology of the developmental stages (metrocytes and merozoites) lead to the conclusion that the two types of cysts examined may belong to one species of Sarcocystis.
