In vivo and in vitro measurements of P32-uptake in the ocular tissue in cases of malignant melanoma.

In vivo and in vitro measurements of radioactive phosphorus uptake after intravenous injection of P32 in 26 cases of malignant melanoma of the choroid is reported. The specific radioactivity of dissected ocular tissue after enucleation is described. No statistically significant relationship between the radioactive phosphorus uptake and the histologically differentiated cell type was found. It was possible to demonstrate the P32 uptake as a function of the mass of the tumor.

[Avulsio bulbi (author's transl)].

It is reported about a 14 year old girl, sustaining an avulsion of the left eye-ball by a coat-rack. The optic nerve was cutted 18 mm retrobulbarly. In perimetry of the fellow-eye a temporo-superior defect was found as proof of traumatisation of the anterior-loop-fibers in the chiasm.

[The situation of suicide prevention (author's transl)].

Suicide research has always been especially concerned with the social connections. Its results however have not been sufficiently used for the benefit of suicide prevention. Suicide prevention is linked to a somatically oriented medicine, which is not able to provide with an after care program. To show the present status of practical suicide prevention, an investigation was carried out in Hanover, the result of which postulates for an intesification of social services and psychiatric consulting services; it also demands a support of counseling services by telephone, special information about the possibilities of suicide prevention, and the initiation of suicide prevention centers in big towns, that work with an inter-disciplinary staff.

[Injuries of the rectum in barium contrast enema].

Perforation of the rectum during a barium enema can be catastrophic. Most reports and in our experience too, the lethality in these patients is more than 50%. This effect of barium is not widely appreciated. Injections of barium sulfate with faeces, of commercial barium both sterile and unsterile into the peritoneal cavity and barium perforation were fatal in 20--48 hours in the dog without further treatment. This study shows that the repair of a barium perforation should be considered as one of the most important emergency procedures. Operative methods and problems are described.

Discovery and characterization of non-competitive antagonists of group I metabotropic glutamate receptors.

We have investigated the mechanism of inhibition of the new group I mGluR antagonists CPCCOEt and MPEP and determined that both compounds have a non-competitive mode of inhibition. Furthermore using chimeric/mutated receptors constructs we have found that these antagonists act at a novel pharmacological site located in the trans-membrane (TM). Specific non-conserved amino acid residues in the TM domain have been identified which are necessary for the inhibition by CPCCOEt and MPEP of the mGlul and mGlu5 receptors, respectively. Using molecular modeling a model of the TM domain was built for both mGlu1 and mGlu5 receptor subtypes. Docking of CPCCOEt and MPEP into their respective model allowed the modelisation of the novel binding site.
