Improved silica-zirconia sol synthesis for fabrication of a single-mode embedded dielectric channel waveguide with low transmission losses.

A novel inorganic-organic hybrid silica-zirconia solgel material, which can generate 10 microm thick film in a single spin-coating process, has been developed and employed in the fabrication of an embedded dielectric channel waveguide on a silica buffer layer of a silicon substrate. The fabricated channel waveguide core had steep ridge walls, good smoothness, and high robustness, and the novel sol synthesis enabled a precise control of the geometrical and optical parameters of the embedded dielectric channel waveguide. In the 1.55 microm telecommunication window, the fundamental modes TE(00) and TM(00) in the embedded channel waveguide had low transmission losses of 0.40 +/- 0.03 dB/cm and 0.59 +/- 0.03 dB/cm, respectively.

Search for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi --> phi eta and phi eta'.

Using a data sample of 58 x 10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Spectrometer II detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, searches for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi to phi eta and phi eta' are performed. The phi signals, which are reconstructed in K+K- final states, are used to tag the eta and eta' decays. No signals are found for the invisible decays of either eta or eta', and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be 1.65 x 10(-3) for the ratio B(eta-->invisible)/B(eta --> gamma gamma) and 6.69 x 10(-2) for B(eta' --> invisible)/B(eta' --> gammagamma). These are the first searches for eta and eta' decays into invisible final states.

Anisotropy and corotation of galactic cosmic rays.

The intensity of Galactic cosmic rays is nearly isotropic because of the influence of magnetic fields in the Milky Way. Here, we present two-dimensional high-precision anisotropy measurement for energies from a few to several hundred teraelectronvolts (TeV), using the large data sample of the Tibet Air Shower Arrays. Besides revealing finer details of the known anisotropies, a new component of Galactic cosmic ray anisotropy in sidereal time is uncovered around the Cygnus region direction. For cosmic-ray energies up to a few hundred TeV, all components of anisotropies fade away, showing a corotation of Galactic cosmic rays with the local Galactic magnetic environment. These results have broad implications for a comprehensive understanding of cosmic rays, supernovae, magnetic fields, and heliospheric and Galactic dynamic environments.

Observation of a broad 1-- resonant structure around 1.5 GeV/c2 in the K+K- mass spectrum in J/psi-->K+K-pi0.

A broad peak is observed at low K+K- invariant mass in J/psi-->K+K-pi(0) decays found in a sample of 5.8x10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. The statistical significance of the broad resonance is much larger than 5sigma. A partial wave analysis shows that the J;{PC} of this structure is 1--. Its pole position is determined to be [1576(-55)(+49)(stat)-91+98(syst)] MeV/c(2)-i/2[818(-23)(+22)(stat)-133+64(syst)] MeV/c(2). These parameters are not compatible with any known meson resonances.

Measurements of the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and the resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S).

We measure the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and non-DD[over ] to be (46.7+/-4.7+/-2.3)%, (36.9+/-3.7+/-2.8)%, (83.6+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, and (16.4+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, respectively. The resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S) are measured to be M_(psi(3770))=3772.2+/-0.7+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(3770))(tot)=26.9+/-2.4+/-0.3 MeV, and Gamma_(psi(3770))(ee)=251+/-26+/-11 eV; M_(psi(2S))=3685.5+/-0.0+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(2S))(tot)=331+/-58+/-2 keV, and Gamma_(psi(2S))(ee)=2.330+/-0.036+/-0.110 keV. We also measure the light hadron R value to be R(uds)=2.262+/-0.054+/-0.109 in the energy region from 3.660 to 3.872 GeV.

The role of XPB in cell apoptosis and viability and its relationship with p53, p21(waf1/cip1) and c-myc in hepatoma cells.

BACKGROUND: Accumulation of DNA damage has been implicated in hepatocarcinogenesis. XPB plays a pivotal part in repairing damaged DNA. However, up to now, the biological effect of XPB on hepatoma cells remains elusive. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we investigated the role of XPB in the apoptosis and the viability of hepatoma cells by using the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labelling and cell viability assay; we also investigated their relationship with p53, p21(waf1/cip1) and c-myc by using the RT-PCR and Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the control cells HepG2/pcDNA3.1 or HepG2, XPB-transfected HepG2 cells (HepG2/pcDNA3.1-XPB) displayed lower viability, weaker activity and higher apoptosis index. At the same time, an increased expression of p21(waf1/cip1) mRNA, protein and p53 protein in addition to a decreased expression of c-myc mRNA and protein were detected in HepG2/pcDNA3.1-XPB cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that XPB could inhibit the proliferation of hepatoma cells and had a positive effect on the expression of p53 and p21(waf1/cip1) but a negative effect on c-myc.

Observation of two new N* peaks in J/psi-->ppi-n and ppi+n decays.

The decay J/psi-->NNpi provides an effective isospin 1/2 filter for the piN system due to isospin conservation. Using 58x10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Electromagnetic Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/psi-->ppi-n+c.c. events are obtained. Besides the two well-known N* peaks at around 1500 MeV/c2 and 1670 MeV/c2, there are two new, clear N* peaks in the ppi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV/c2 and 2030 MeV/c2 with statistical significance of 11sigma and 13sigma, respectively. We identify these as the first direct observation of the N*(1440) peak and a long-sought missing N* peak above 2 GeV/c2 in the piN invariant mass spectrum.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the omega(phi) mass spectrum from the doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi.

An enhancement near threshold is observed in the omega(phi) invariant mass spectrum from the doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-suppressed decays of J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi, based on a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A partial wave analysis shows that this enhancement favors JP=0+, and its mass and width are M=1812(+19)(-26)(stat)+/-18(syst) MeV/c2 and Gamma=105+/-20(stat)+/-28(syst) MeV/c2. The product branching fraction is determined to be B(J/psi-->gammaX)B(X-->omega(phi))=[2.61+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.65(syst)]x10(-4).

Angle-closure glaucoma in East Asian and European people. Different diseases?

In contrast to the pattern of disease in Europeans, primary angle closure has a higher prevalence and tends to be asymptomatic in East Asians. The higher prevalence is attributed to differences in anterior chamber and angle anatomy. Several studies suggest that central anterior chamber depth is shallower in East Asians than in Europeans, although this is not universally accepted. It is debated whether pupil block is the predominant mechanism of angle closure in Asian people. Meaningful comparison between studies is currently hindered by differences in patient selection, examination technique, and case definition; however, the major scientific deficiency is the paucity of prospective followup data to give an insight into natural history of the disease. This review examines the data on prevalence, risk factors, and mechanism of angle closure. Special consideration is given to limitations of methodology in research to date, with the intention of developing more robust data in future studies.

Preventing paediatric obesity; recommendations from a community-based qualitative investigation.

Childhood obesity is on the rise, and interventions targeted at pre-school-aged children are essential for the primary prevention of this disease. Physical activity programming and decreasing screen viewing may be advantageous ways to reduce the early onset of obesity. Parents' perceptions regarding effective tools and programmes to target obesity are needed to develop an efficacious programme. Ten semi-structured focus groups were conducted for this qualitative study. Two experienced moderators facilitated all focus groups which were conducted in local day cares, workplaces and play groups, frequented by parents. All focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Strategies to ensure trustworthiness of the data were employed. A heterogeneous sample of 71 parents were asked about their pre-schoolers' physical activity levels and screen viewing behaviours, in addition to their suggestions for programmes to facilitate the development of healthy habits. Parents agreed that physical activity programming was an ideal way to combat obesity in pre-schoolers. Programming suggestions included involving parents in the programme planning and operation, increasing accessibility to programmes, providing more facilities, better promotional strategies such as the use of a television commercial, and resources/ideas to engage children in the home. Parents' programming suggestions lacked discussion around addressing screen viewing as a viable way to attend to the current obesity epidemic. Parents must be made aware of programmes and resources currently available. Modifying current programmes' scheduling to include morning and afternoon sessions, and arranging for physicians to hand out resources with physical activity ideas, particularly during the winter months, is essential.

Observation of a resonance in Chi(1835) in J/psi --> gammapi+ pi- eta-.

The decay channel J/psi --> gamma(pi)(+)pi(-)eta is analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A resonance, the Chi(1835), is observed in the pi(+)pi(-)eta invariant-mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.7 sigma. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function yields a mass M = 1833.7 +/- 6.1(stat) +/- 2.7(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Tau = 67.7 +/- 20.3(stat) +/- 7.7(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/psi --> gammaChi) . B(Chi --> pi(+)pi(-)eta) = [2.2 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.4(syst)] x 10(-4). The mass and width of the Chi(1835) are not compatible with any known meson resonance. Its properties are consistent with expectations for the state that produces the strong pp mass threshold enhancement observed in the J/psi --> gammapp process at BESII.

Structure determination and relative properties of novel cubic borates MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Li, M' = Sr; M = Na, M' = Sr, Ba).

A series of novel borates, MM'4(BO3)3 (M = Li, M' = Sr; M = Na, M' = Sr, Ba), have been successfully synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. The crystal structures have been determined from powder X-ray diffraction data. They crystallize in the cubic space group Iad with large lattice parameters: a = 14.95066(5) A for LiSr4(BO3)3, a = 15.14629(6) A for NaSr4(BO3)3, and a = 15.80719(8) A for NaBa4(BO3)3. The structure was built up from 64 small cubic grids, in which the M' atoms took up the corner angle and the BO3 triangles or MO6 cubic octahedra filled in the interspaces. The isolated [BO3]3- anionic groups are perpendicular to each other, distributed along three 100 directions. The anisotropic polarizations were counteracting, forming an isotropic crystal. Sr and Ba atoms were found to be completely soluble in the solid solution NaSr(4-)xBax(BO3)3 (0 < or = x < or = 4). The photoluminescence of samples doped with the ions Eu2+ and Eu3+ was studied, and effective yellow and red emission was detected, respectively. The results are consistent with the crystallographic study. The DTA and TGA curves of them show that they are chemically stable and congruent melting compounds.

Observation of a threshold enhancement in the plambda invariant-mass spectrum.

An enhancement near the m(p)+M(Lambda) mass threshold is observed in the combined pLambda and pLambda invariant-mass spectrum from J/psi-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. It can be fit with an S-wave Breit-Wigner resonance with a mass m=2075+/-12(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV and a width of Gamma=90+/-35(stat)+/-9(syst) MeV; it can also be fit with a P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance. Evidence for a similar enhancement is also observed in psi(')-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. The analysis is based on samples of 5.8x10(7)J/psi and 1.4x10(7)psi(') decays accumulated in the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Observation by an air-shower array in Tibet of the multi-TeV cosmic-ray anisotropy due to terrestrial orbital motion around the Sun.

We report on the solar diurnal variation of the galactic cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet III air shower array during the period from 1999 to 2003. In the higher-energy event samples (12 and 6.2 TeV), the variations are fairly consistent with the Compton-Getting anisotropy due to the terrestrial orbital motion around the Sun, while the variation in the lower-energy event sample (4.0 TeV) is inconsistent with this anisotropy. This suggests an additional anisotropy superposed at the multi-TeV energies, e.g., the solar modulation effect. This is the highest-precision measurement of the Compton-Getting anisotropy ever made.

Observation of the decay psi(2S)-->K0SK0L.

The decay psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L) is observed using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L))=(5.24+/-0.47+/-0.48)x10(-5). Compared with J/psi-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L), the psi(2S) branching fraction is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD "12%" rule. The result, together with the branching fractions of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (pi(+)pi(-) and K+K-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.

Disorders of the blood-aqueous barrier after phacoemulsification in diabetic patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the function of the blood-aqueous barrier after phacoemulsification with implantation of a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) in diabetic patients. METHODS: All patients were enrolled from those scheduled for phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Guangzhou from March 2002 to June 2002. The classification on diabetic retinopathy (DR) was based on the fundus examination after cataract surgery. The blood-aqueous barrier function was examined using the laser flare cell meter (Kowa FC-2000) preoperatively and on postoperative days 1, 7, 30, and 90 by an independent examiner who was masked to the DR classification. Patients were operated by one experienced surgeon as per standard clinical protocol and were provided the same postoperative medical care. A linear regression and Wilcoxon test were used for the analysis. RESULTS: A total of 112 patients were divided into three groups: patients without diabetic mellitus as normal control (n=56), diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy (n=2), with nonproliferation diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) (n=37), and diabetic patients with proliferation diabetic retinopathy (PDR) (n=17). All patients were examined and successfully followed up for 3 months after cataract surgery. Aqueous flare mean photon counts in PDR, NPDR, and control eyes were 8.94+/-0.57, 7.03+/-0.27, and 6.94+/-0.34 before surgery and increased to 32.42+/-0.67, 26.07+/-0.83, 26.27+/-1.37 on the first day after surgery (P<0.05), then decreased to 19.86+/-0.78, 14.08+/-0.54 and 13.96+/-1.05 at 7 days after surgery (P<0.05), 13.24+/-0.29, 9.86+/-0.33, and 9.07+/-0.43 at 30 days after surgery (P<0.05); eventually, the counting decreased to 11.25+/-0.31, 7.24+/-0.67, and 7.16+/-0.27 at 90 days after surgery (P<0.05). Linear regression model suggested that other potential variables, such as age, sex, eye (left/right), phaco time, phaco energy, and hypertension were not related to the outcome. For patients without diabetes mellitus and diabetic patients with NPDR, highly statistically significant differences (P<0.05) were found between preoperative flare value and those measured on days 1, 7, and 30 after surgery, but no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) were found between the preoperative flare value and those measured on postoperative days 90. However, patients with PDR still had a higher flare value even on postoperative day 90. The patients with intraoperative iris prolapse had a higher flare value between days 1 and 7 postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with a foldable intraocular lens implantation affects the blood-aqueous barrier more severely in diabetic patients with PDR than patients with NPDR and nondiabetic patients.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the pp mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays.

We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma<30 MeV/c(2) at the 90% confidence level. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known particle.
