The effects of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) on the rate of lipid peroxidation and lipase activity in the discrete areas of the brain and spinal cord were studied. Administration of metasystox in two different doses 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally daily for 10 days have shown a dose-related depletion of total lipids, cholesterol and esterified fatty acids in the rat cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord. The rate of lipid peroxidation and lipase activity showed dose-dependent increase in different regions of the CNS. Administration of alpha-tocopherol alone caused significant reduction of lipid peroxidation and lipase activity. When it was administered simultaneously with metasystox, alpha-tocopherol prevented the metasystox-induced increase of lipid peroxidation and lipase activity.

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) diagnosis of extrahepatic biliary obstruction was correlated with laparotomy findings. Out of a total of 55 cases who had PTC, 28 underwent laparotomy. PTC diagnosis of the cause of obstruction was correct in 93 percent of them. The differentiation of benign from malignant lesion was accurate in all the cases. It is concluded that PTC is valuable in the diagnosis of the cause of extrahepatic obstruction.

The effects of the pesticide, metasystox (O,O-dimethyl-S-2 or Metasystor (ethylsulphinyl) ethylthiophosphate), on various lipid fractions in the discrete areas of the brain were studied. The daily intraperitoneal administration of 4 mg/kg body weight of metasystox for 10 days has depleted the levels of total lipids, phospholipids, cholesterol, esterified fatty acids and gangliosides in cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord. But the lipase and lipid peroxidation measured in the cerebral hemisphere were significantly increased. It is possible that the inhibition of the lipid levels in the discrete areas of the brain may be due to the increase activity of lipase and lipid peroxidation.
Counts of lamina propria and intraepithelial cells, lymphoid and polymorphonuclear, have been performed on semithin sections of endoscopic biopsies from the duodenum of patients with ulcer-associated duodenitis, with non-specific duodenitis, and from controls. In both types of duodenitis there were significant increases in lamina propria counts of plasma cells, lymphocytes and eosinophils, and in intraepithelial lymphocyte counts, when compared with controls. In control specimens, neutrophil polymorphs were very infrequent but a substantial neutrophil polymorph infiltration of the epithelium and lamina propria was present in both types of duodenitis. In biopsies from areas of duodenitis scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of cells, which are probably neutrophil polymorphs, on the luminal surface of the mucosa. Abnormalities in cell counts were present only in biopsies taken from visually inflamed areas of the duodenal bulb. These values returned to normal after healing of duodenitis with cimetidine. This study highlights the complex nature of the mucosal cellular infiltrate in in duodenitis, particularly the striking increase in polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Histopathological features of ulcer-associated and non-specific duodenitis are identical.

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) using Chiba needle was employed to diagnose obstructive jaundice in 31 subjects. It was successful in all 27 (87%) subjects who had dilatation of the biliary tree. Out of them, 15 had features suggestive of carcinoma, 9 had features of stone and 3 had features of stricture of the common bile duct (CBD). Surgery was done in 11 cases and PTC diagnosis of carcinoma of CBD in 4 and stricture of the same in one subject were confirmed. While in the remaining 6 subjects with a PTC diagnosis of CBD stone, 4 were found to be so and 2 had stricture of the duct. Three subjects had complications such as bile peritonitis, cholangitis and shock. In majority of the cases, the biochemical parameters were inconclusive. These results suggest that PTC may be useful in the diagnosis of obstructive jaundice and this procedure should be employed more widely.
The exposure of rats to SO2 (10 p.p.m.) for one hour daily for 30 days caused depletion of total lipids in all brain areas. The contents of phospholipid were elevated in cerebellum and brain stem, but were depleted in cerebral hemisphere. Cholesterol levels showed an increase in various brain regions. On the other hand, gangliosides were increased in cerebellum and brain stem, but were decreased in cerebral hemisphere. Interestingly, cholesterol/phospholipid ratio was increased in different regions of the brain. Lipase activity was elevated in cerebral hemisphere. Lipid peroxidation showed marked increment in whole brain and in all the brain areas studied. The results suggest that SO2-exposure induces degradation of lipids. Interestingly, the lipid contents are affected differentially in the various parts of the brain.

The ependymal structure of the fourth ventricle floor of adult rhesus monkeys was investigated using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Each half of the floor exhibited dense ciliation which decreased towards the median sulcus. The area postrema and the facial colliculus lacked cilia and were covered with non-ciliated ependymal cells. Along the entire length of the median sulcus supraependymal globular protrusions were seen. Over the rostral and middle thirds of the sulcus these protrusions exhibited interwoven ridges. At the former situation they were closely approximated but at the latter they were on the surface of non-ciliated nodules which were lying amongst sparsely ciliated cells. In the caudal third these protrusions presented smoother surfaces without any structural details over them. Transmission electron microscopy through the upper two thirds of the median sulcus revealed these surface protrusions to be non-ciliated cells having long and profuse network of interwoven microvilli over their luminal surface. These cell bodies exhibited well-defined supranuclear Golgi complexes, vesiculated rough and smooth surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, free ribosomes and polyribosomes, few electron dense granules, network of microtubules and light and dense multivesiculated bodies. These features suggested a secretory and/or absorptive role, rather that autophagy to these surface specialization.
