A constant tension dynamic splint.

We have presented a new method of dynamic splinting that allows a greater range of protected motion under constant tension. The device has been designed for use with newer methods of tendon repair in situtations where early controlled motion is allowed.

A comparison of the effect of albendazole, cambendazole, and thiabendazole on the larval development of three hymenolepidid cestodes.

Flour beetles (Tribolium confusum) parasitized either by Hymenolepis diminuta, H. nana, or H. microstoma were fed continuously on flour mixed either with thiabendazole, cambendazole, or albendazole (drug concentration was always 10%) from day 1 (24 hr) to day 10 postinfection when the experiments were terminated. All drugs markedly inhibited the development of H. diminuta and H. nana. Populations of these species recovered from beetles fed anthelmintics were composed mostly of under-developed forms, many of which still retained the size and appearance of newly hatched oncospheres, whereas all the parasites recovered from the control beetles (fed only flour) reached full development. Parasites inhibited by cambendazole and albendazole recovered and reached full development within 9 days after treatment was terminated. Also, results were obtained which implied that some parasites were able to continue their development at a reduced rate in the presence of the drugs. Hymenolepis microstoma differed from the other species in its response to the drugs. Albendazole and thiabendazole had no effect on its development and it was only slightly inhibited by cambendazole. Larvae recovered from beetles fed the latter drug had all developed beyond the oncosphere stage but 3 to 5% of them repeatedly failed to reach full development. The drugs varied in their effects on the flour beetles. An average of 63% and 33% of those fed thiabendazole and cambendazole, respectively, died before the 10th day of infection. Albendazole, on the other hand, had no effect on beetle survival.

Comparison of an adapted milk with whole cows milk.

Two groups of babies, one having SMA, one homogenised milk, were studied. Haemoglobin was measured in the neonatal period, and at 3, 6, 10 1/2 and 15 months. Five babies of the homogenised milk group became anaemic. Stools were tested for occult blood, with more strongly positive test results found in babies having homogenised milk. Serum lipids were measured at 3, 6, 10 1/2 and 15 months. Serum cholesterol was significantly higher at three and six months in the homogenised milk group. There were no significant differences in growth between the groups. Review of progress at five years of age discovered higher serum cholesterol in those children of social class three who had homogenised milk compared with the similar five year olds who had had SMA.

Antithymocyte globulin in the management of cutaneous T cell lymphoma.

Four patients with cutaneous T cell lymphoma were treated with iv administered horse antithymocyte globulin. Evidence of a beneficial response was obtained in three of the four patients. Limited sensitivity of neoplastic T cells to complement-mediated lysis in the presence of the antithymocyte globulin was identified, suggesting that other mechanisms may be responsible for the observed clinical responses.

Further studies of mitochondrial and lipid storage myopathies.

Further observations on a family with facioscapulohumeral (FSH) muscular dystrophy due to mitochondrial myopathy, and on a case with lipid storage myopathy are reported. One member of the family with FSH muscular dystrophy died due to a viral pneumonia, during which she developed gross hyperlacticacidaemia and acidosis. Autopsy examination showed that the mitochondrial morphological abnormality was restricted to the skeletal muscle. Two other members of the family, who also had mitochondrial myopathy, have developed a cerebellar syndrome. The skeletal muscle carnitine level in the propositus of this family was normal. A woman with lipid storage myopathy has been shown to have skeletal muscle carnitine deficiency, the plasma carnitine level being only slightly lower than normal.
