Repair of split earlobes. A review and a new technique.

Numerous techniques for repairing split earlobes have been described in the literature. They range from excision of skin on the cleft edges and resuturing to fashioning flaps of skin from the posterior aspects of the earlobes, with or without a Z-plasty at the free margins. A different technique, which has not been described before, is presented in this paper.

The use of kite flaps to prevent displacements of eyebrows.

Displacements of eyebrows, with or without loss of tissue, attract attention because of their prominent sites. The kite flap is a useful surgical technique to cover a cutaneous defect adjacent to an eyebrow when closure of a wide fusiform excision by straight-line suturing may displace the eyebrow. Excisions of cutaneous lesions close to eyebrows and reconstructions by kite flaps are described and illustrated.

Surgical correction of deformities on upper oral lips and lower eyelids.

Two cases of deformities on upper lips, one from a neurofibroma and another from spontaneous regression of a hemangioma, and two cases of ectropion caused by scars resulting from infection in one and radiodermatitis in the other were corrected surgically. The methods of correction are described and illustrated.

Augmentation of muscular wasting in the hand from leprosy.

One of the stigmata of leprosy in the hand is muscular wasting between the metacarpals of the thumb and index finger. Such a deformity, which may rarely arise for other neuropathic reasons, may pass unnoticed in places where leprosy is not endemic, but is obvious to all in places where leprosy is still common, and undesirably stamps afflicted persons as lepers even if the disease is arrested. A surgical technique is described in which a buried dermal graft is used for augmentation of the depression of that muscular wasting between thumb and index finger.

Sexually transmitted diseases in Indonesia.

Epidemiological factors and changing ecological conditions have greatly facilitated the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and led to their rising incidence in Indonesia. Gonorrhoea is at present very prevalent, and drug resistance among circulating strains of gonococci is a contributing factor. Despite medical advances in both diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, these are becoming commoner; unlike other communicable diseases they have so far defied efforts to control them.
