Multiple unit activities recorded from the medial preoptic area during copulatory behavior in freely moving male rats.

Multiple unit activities (MUAs) were recorded from the medial preoptic area (MPO) during copulatory behavior in freely moving male rats. The baseline firing rate in the male MPO was 19.6 spikes/s +/- 7.1 S.E. (n = 14), and it was increased by 36.7% when a female rat was introduced (26.8 spikes/s +/- 8.9 S.E., n = 14). The firing rate remained elevated until ejaculation. The maximum firing rate (53.5 spikes/s +/- 16.7 S.E., n = 14) was obtained specifically during pursuit-mounting behavior. This high frequency firing with pursuit-mounting behavior was, however, immediately inhibited for 8.2 s +/- 2.1 S.E. (n = 14) when mounting was followed by intromission. The firing-inhibition was further prolonged (120.9 s +/- 44.6 S.E., n = 14) when ejaculation was performed after mounting and intromission. In cases where mounting was elicited alone, a firing-inhibition was not observed and the firing rate after mounting returned to the average firing rate during copulatory behavior. These results suggest that the MPO neurons may play a major role in pursuit-mounting, intromission and ejaculation.

Learning of disabled children and their environment.

It has been pointed out that cases of reading disability are rare in Japan due to the specificity of the language structure. Fifty children with learning disabilities were examined both neurologically and psychologically, and they were classified into three groups; the first group had alexia and agraphia (2 cases), 30 cases showing signs of minimal brain dysfunction with choreiform movements of the eyeballs comprised the second group and 18 cases with a history of asphyxia at birth and/or severe jaundice and clumsiness without choreiform movements of the eyeballs formed the third group. The children belonging to the second and third groups showed that the characteristic features of reading disability are related to their circumstances. The results showed that suitable dynamic guidance including their environment was necessary for them.

Benign lipoblastoma and liposarcoma in children.

This report deals with a case of benign lipoblastoma and of myxoid liposarcoma occurring in the back of a 5-month-old infant and in the cheek of an 11-year-old boy, respectively. The benign lipoblastoma was characterized by a distinct lobulation of mature and immature fat lobules with a myxoid stroma, plexiform capillaries, and relatively uniform lipoblasts. The maturation of fat occurred from the peripherally located myxoid tissue to centrally located more mature fat cells. In our case, the capsular and interlobular mesenchymal tissue appeared to be intimately related to the formation of new immature fat lobules. In contrast, the myxoid liposarcoma showed a predominently myxoid appearance with many atypical bizarre lipoblasts; their nuclear atypia and pleomorphism were also evident in the cytologic examination of smears obtained from the gelatinous tumor. Furthermore, more mature fat cells, appearing as small foci, tended to be located at the periphery of the myxoid lobules that were incompletely separated by thin fibrous connective tissue septa.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder associated with squamous metaplasia and adenocarcinoma in situ of the mucosal columnar epithelium.

A case of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder is presented. Unlike most previously reported cases, the tumor developed in association with squamous metaplasia as well as dysplastic and in situ adenocarcinomatous changes of the gallbladder epithelium. The significance of these lesions is discussed in relation to the histogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma or adenosquamous carcinoma of this organ.

[Retrograde metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma with an interesting lesion of the stomach--a case report].

A 48-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) showing tumor emboli in the portal vein and a typical retrograde metastasis via the portal vessels, is reported. Metastatic lesions were localized only in the veins of the lesser omentum, stomach, lower esophagus, pancreas, left hemidiaphragm and left adrenal gland, due to the hemodynamic alteration of the portal blood flow caused by liver cirrhosis and HCC. No metastatic lesion was found in the lung, Kidney, bone or intestine. As gastric metastasis Borrmann I, II, III and submusal tumor types were reported, but the present case revealed hard fold-like lesions, as it were, hard white varices.

[A case of CSF (colony-stimulating factor)-producing lung cancer and a review of the literature].

A 36-year-old man with large-cell carcinoma of the lung showed marked leukocytosis of up to 109,300/mm3. As high CSF activity was detected in the pleural effusion and the supernatant of cell cultures originating from the effusion, a diagnosis of CSF-producing lung cancer was made. Twenty-one CSF-producing lung cancers have been reported in Japan. They comprised 13 large-cell carcinomas, six squamous cell carcinomas, one adenocarcinoma and one small cell carcinoma.

Influence of fetal calf serum on growth-inhibitory activity of human recombinant gamma-interferon (GI-3) in vitro.

The growth-inhibitory activity of human recombinant gamma-interferon (rIFN-gamma: GI-3) against 30 human cultured cell lines derived from leukemias and lymphoma (9 T-cell, 13 B-cell, 2 nonTnonB and 6 myeloid cell lines) was measured quantitatively by in vitro regrowth assay. Only three myelomonocytoid cell lines (HL-60, U937 and THP-1-0) were found to be sensitive, and HL-60 was the most sensitive. However, the sensitivity of HL-60 was found to be much influenced by both the batch and the concentration of fetal calf serum (FCS) used in the experiment. In the experiments using a certain FCS, GI-3 had a high antiproliferative activity against HL-60 at the optimal concentration (10(4)-10(5) U/ml), when assayed in medium containing 10% FCS. Both lower and higher concentrations of the interferon than 10(4)-10(5) U/ml resulted in decreased antiproliferative activity. When a high concentration (30%) of the FCS was employed in the assay, the antiproliferative activity of GI-3 was also much reduced. In the experiments using the other FCS, no antiproliferative activity of GI-3 against HL-60 was observed on assay in the medium containing 10% FCS, but significant antiproliferative activity was observed in the medium containing 30% FCS from the same source. Experiments using serum-free culture medium revealed that GI-3 itself had both a slight growth-inhibitory action at the optimal concentrations (at about 10(4) U/ml) and growth-enhancing activity at high (10(6) U/ml) concentration. The antiviral titer of GI-3 was stable during 72 hr of incubation in growth medium with or without cells. These findings suggest that there are cofactors in the serum which positively or negatively influence the growth-regulatory activity of GI-3 against HL-60 cells.

[A case of early laryngeal cancer observed after surgery for lung cancer].

A 56-year-old man, a heavy cigarette smoker, had his left upper lobe resected for lung cancer. Seventeen months later, he was diagnosed as early laryngeal cancer by bronchofiberscopy. In this case, postoperative follow-up study with septum cytology was extremely effective. He underwent radiation therapy for the laryngeal cancer. Today, three and a half years later, no signs or symptoms of any cancer can be found. Cases of preceding lung cancer in multiple primary cancer patients having lung and laryngeal cancer are very rare in the literature. All of them have been heavy cigarette smokers and majority of them men.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in Osaka, Japan.

Six hundred and eight-four cases with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) in Osaka, Japan were reviewed, using current histopathological classification to obtain a general feature of Japanese lymphomas. There were no remarkable differences in the distribution of age, sex and the location of primary tumors between Japanese NHL and the disease in Western races. Histologically, however, several differences were present; in particular, the lower frequencies of nodular lymphomas of nodal origin and lymphocytic type of nodal and extranodal origin in the present cases. About 10% of the cases show a peculiar histology characteristic for adult T cell lymphomas. From this study, it appears that the ratio of low-grade malignant NHL in Japan is much lower than in the Western countries.

Inosamycin, a complex of new aminoglycoside antibiotics. I. Production, isolation and properties.

A strain of Streptomyces hygroscopicus No. J296-21 (ATCC 39150) was found to produce a complex of new antibiotics, called inosamycins, which consisted of components A, B, C, D and E. They are novel aminocyclitol antibiotics structurally related to neomycin, paromomycin and ribostamycin. The antibiotic complex and each component of inosamycin exhibit a broad antibacterial spectrum but they are inactive against most of the aminoglycoside-resistant organisms. The antibacterial activity of inosamycin A, the major component of the complex, is comparable to that of neomycin but its acute toxicity is significantly lower (ca. 1/3) than that of neomycin.

Inosamycin, a complex of new aminoglycoside antibiotics. II. Structure determination.

Structures of the new aminocyclitol antibiotics, inosamycins A, B, C, D and E, have been determined by a combination of chemical degradation and spectroscopic studies. They are structurally related to neomycin, paromomycin and ribostamycin but differ in that all the inosamycin components contain 2-deoxy-scyllo-inosamine in place of 2-deoxystreptamine in the known aminoglycoside antibiotics.
